Designer nipples are 2017's most worrying cosmetic surgery trend
Celebrities have kick-started a number of troubling trends. From over-zealous lip enhancements à la Kylie Jenner to super-sized breasts pioneered by noughties stars, women have always looked to A-listers for how they should look.
One surgeon has revealed a surprising new trend in cosmetic surgery. New York-based plastic surgeon Dr Norman Rowe says he has seen an influx of women wanting ‘designer nipples.’
Dr Rowe revealed to the Independent that his weekly number of nipple patients had more than quadrupled, going from around four a week to around 18.
This huge rise has occurred in less than six months and Dr Rowe thinks he knows exactly why.
“You see a lot of celebrities now wearing see-through dresses,” he commented. “My patients come in with pictures from magazines of nipples that they want. They want to wear see-through dresses too, and that makes them take a closer look at their nipples.”
The variety of nipple adjustments available to women is only growing. The colour, size and symmetry of nipples can be altered in procedures that last as little as 20 minutes.
According to Dr Rowe, celebrities who regularly go braless (such as Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner and Rihanna) are the cause of women becoming self-conscious about their nipples.
He has even been asked to create more protruding nipples that will be noticed when wearing a bikini. “For want of a better word, they want headlights,” he explains.
“Nothing is above cosmetic surgery now. People are looking at every detail. It’s not enough now to get a breast augmentation or rhinoplasty – women want to fine-tune every element. And these days, that’s possible.”
Reportedly, symmetrical nipples are the most asked for procedure. This is the most minimally invasive surgery and usually only involves work on one nipple.
A lot of new mothers ask for their nipples to be lightened using a laser or cream. If you want darker nipples, a medical tattoo can be performed.
Making a nipple smaller or larger is also a popular procedure. To make your areola or nipple smaller, a small incision must be made with the chance of some minimal scarring.
Enlarging your nipple or areola is much simpler. Filler is injected into the area, increasing its size and lasting from anywhere between nine months and two years.
