This delicious type of cheese is now a superfood
Admit it; you’re looking for an excuse to eat more cheese this very moment.
We’re all massive fans of the yellow stuff, but it’s rarely considered healthy, exactly.
But now, it no longer has to be confined to the category of ‘treat’, as a certain kind of cheese is now considered to have superfood status.
A study has found that Swiss cheeses – such as Gruyère and Emmental – is packed with healthy bacteria.
We’ve all watched enough yoghurt adverts to know that probiotics – live bacteria – are good for our gut, and now, Swiss cheeses have joined the family of extra-healthy foods thanks to being full of them.
To come to this conclusion, researchers tested the positive effects of the probiotics in those type of cheeses in roundworms, discovering that they had longer lifespans, lower stress levels and better immune systems as a result of consuming them.
Yes – people are not the same as roundworms. But the researchers reckon the effect could be applied to humans too.
Emmental has something called propionibacterium freudenreichii in it, a bacterium which turns lactate into acetate, propionate and carbon dioxide.
And the researchers noted that propionate and acetate are both known for the immune-boosting properties in the human gut.
In other words, crack open another packet of gruyère – it’s for your own good.
