Corrie fans ‘work out’ Betsy’s real dad - and he’s already on the street
Coronation Street fans have taken to social media to work out who the real father of Betsy Swain is, and their likely candidate is already in Weatherfield. Betsy, who is played by Sydney Martin, arrived on the street earlier this year and is the daughter of DS Lisa Swain. Betsy’s relationship with her mum is somewhat strained following the death of Lisa’s wife Becky while on duty, and actress Sydney describes her character as “cocky but she’s also such a smart cookie.”
Since her arrival on the street, Betsy has been at the centre of the drama beginning when she became involved with solicitor Joel Deering, who she blackmailed before he threatened her. Joel, of course, was guilty of grooming young girls including Lauren Bolton, and following his death a number of people have become suspects, including Dee-Dee, Betsy’s mum Lisa and corrupt police officer Kit Green.
Kit was recently seen tampering with evidence from the Joel Deering case, and now fans think his antics could solve the mystery of the identity of Betsy’s real dad. On a Coronation Street fan page, one viewer asked: “Could Kit be Betsy’s dad? And that’s why he’s so against Swain?”

Another replied: “100%,” while one viewer speculated: “It’s possible. If the mother used a sperm donor. And Kit donated sperm. Anything is possible in soap land.”

Betsy Swain is the first TV role for Sydney Martin, who won her big break while working in Tesco six days a week. In an interview with OK! in June, she said: “I could not have asked for a better first opportunity,” having auditioned for smaller roles in the soap before she was offered the part of Betsy. She was so thrilled when she heard the news, she handed in her notice to the supermarket before even telling her parents she had won the role.
“I did go to Tesco to hand my notice in first,” she chuckled. Although she did explain that her dad told her she shouldn’t have handed it in so soon. “‘They’re not going to give you a reference at Tesco!’” he exclaimed, although Sydney assured him she wouldn’t need a reference from the supermarket.
Aside from worrying about her Tesco references, the actress said her parents were over the moon at her landing the role. When she had her first picture in a magazine, her parents bought about ten of them. “I think it’s already framed, they just love it!”
