Cheating partners and missing teeth: What your most common dreams mean

Ever dreamt that you were flying? No? Well, you’re missing out.

How about your partner cheating? Ah, there we go – it wasn’t fun, was it?

There are some dreams that, however personal they seem to us, aren’t unusual to have at all – whether that’s ones in which your teeth fall out, your partner runs off with another man or you’re being chased by someone else.

But what do these actually mean, and do we need to worry about having them? We spoke to professional dream analyst Lauri Quinn Loewenberg about some of the most common dreams out there and what meaning lies behind them.

Being chased

If you’re running from someone or something in a nightmare, chances are that you’re running from an issue or confrontation in waking life that you’d rather not face – it could even be something from your past.

“What or whom are you avoiding?” asks Loewenberg.

“Learn to face your issues right away – otherwise you’ll prolong them. When you do face them, these chasing dreams will stop.”

Falling

“You’ve suffered a big let down, or something in your life is going rapidly in the wrong direction,” says Loewenberg.

This could involve anything from finance or relationship to career worries – or perhaps an issue with self esteem.

“Time to redirect this situation or let go of that which is bringing you down,” she suggests.

Loewenberg says that this means you’ve been “loose with your speech” in some way:

“Have you been saying things without thinking first? Have you been gossiping? In what way have you been careless with your speech,” she asks.

“This dream is showing you that you’ve allowed something out of your mouth that should have remained in there permanently… like your teeth!”

Your partner cheating

While people often worry that this indicates their partner is actually cheating, Loewenberg doesn’t recommend going through your partner’s phone quite yet.

“While this dream does indicate a third wheel in the relationship, it’s not necessarily another person but rather another thing – such as work, golf, a new baby – something that is taking your partner’s attention and affection from you,” she explains.

“This dream is showing you that you are feeling left out and this other thing your partner is giving so much time to is causing you to feel ‘cheated’ out of that time that you want.”

The main feeling you have in this dream? Of course; it’s embarrassment.

“Something is causing you to feel vulnerable or unprepared,” says Loewenberg.

“Are you going to be in a situation where all eyes are on you? Are you having a concern about how others perceive you or judge you?

“You may notice that in these dreams, the only one concerned with your nudity is you!”

“That’s your dream trying to show you that you are being overly concerned about an issue in your waking life.

“Don’t sweat it! You’re giving this more energy than anyone else.”

Well, that’s a relief. Though we can’t help but worry about some of the weirder dreams out there, so do we have any cause for concern about experiencing the dreams we do?

“Dreams should never cause you to worry but rather to take action – because they tend to shine a spotlight on an issue or behaviour that needs correcting or improvement,” Loewenberg reassures.

In fact, she believes nightmares can be a beneficial thing as they reveal unresolved, difficult issues:

“Typically, the more disturbing the dream, the more difficult the issue it is trying to help you with,” she explains.

“Look at your dreams as your best friend that only wants the best for you, and who’ll be brutally honest with you about the issues you try to blow off or lie to yourself about.

“Your dreams aren’t there to make you think you’re crazy or to needlessly worry you but rather they are there to guide you, to direct you, to inspire you… to help you get life right.

“That’s why when we are faced with a difficult dilemma or decision we tend to say ‘let me sleep on it’ because what we really are doing is dreaming on it.”

In other words, it’s not worth losing any sleep over.
