Cara Delevingne closes Burberry's LGBTQ-inspired show in a rainbow cape
Yesterday afternoon, the fash pack descended on the Dimco Buildings to play witness to Christopher Bailey‘s final bow for Brit label, Burberry.
With 17 collections under his belt, the designer has built a name-drop worthy empire with original supers, Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell, holding premium membership at the fanbase.
And the February 2018 show further reminded the industry of the label’s mega-status with cool girl Alexa Chung sat amongst past show performers, Chelsea Clinton and Hollywood heavyweights (all decked in co-ordinating heritage check).
To celebrate his final sartorial hoorah, Bailey decided to weave LGBTQ History Month into the very threads of the line with rainbow-emblazoned designs dedicated to three leading charities – the Albert Kennedy Trust, ILGA and the Trevor Project.
We’re talking everything from technicolour puffer jackets to slogan tees reworked with highlighter hues.
It was Adwoa Aboah’s duty to open the designer’s swan song in a paper-bag skirt and fuzzy hoodie, hosed with graffiti.
Before Edie Campbell followed suit, leading a model pack swaddled in striped puffer jackets, super-lengthy scarves and ’80s-inspired shell suits.
On the accessories front, plastic shopping bags carried the brand’s check-heavy clutches while models stomped the catwalk in polka-dot high-tops.
And in further support of the LGBTQ community, Bailey didn’t forget the fashion house’s (recently re-launched) heritage check, as he jazzed-up signature capes, caps and trench coats with a technicolour twist.
“There has never been a more important time to say that in our diversity lies our strength and our creativity,” Bailey said, ahead of the highly-anticipated show.
And rightfully so, as the designer teamed up with United Visual Artists to create rainbow-inspired laser beams which masked models marching the runway.
But he didn’t leave it up to the Insta-worthy set to wow the FROW, as he chose original Burberry ‘It’ girl, Cara Delevingne, to close the collection.
And having since ducked from the catwalk headlights to pursue acting, the 25-year-old seemingly embraced her return in a faux fur rainbow cape and now-famous mischievous smile.
As part of Burberry’s pioneering ‘see-now-buy-now’ model, the collection was available to shop faster than the clothes hit the runway with an impressive 90-minute delivery time courtesy of online giant, Farfetch.
With over 1,300 names on the show’s guest list (and many members of the fash pack still wondering if their tickets got lost in the post), there’s no doubt it’ll prove a sure-fire hit.
And with a final bow and standing ovation, Christopher Bailey checked out.
