Calling all brides-to-be, this £40 DIY wedding cake is sure to inspire your big day
A US woman has gone viral after sharing her brother’s impressive DIY wedding cake - which cost less than $50 (approximately £39).
Jessica Hoyle-King of San Antonio took to Instagram to post a photograph of the couple’s four-tiered masterpiece complete with fresh blooms, buttercream icing and a Pinterest-worthy topper.
Yet despite its crowd-pleasing aesthetic, it was thrown together using just two $18.99 (approximately £15) Costco cream cheese sheet cakes and $10 (approximately £8) flowers from American supermarket giant Trader Joe’s.
“Y’all this DIY cake! It is no secret my bother is frugal... but this wedding took frugality to a whole new level,” Hoyle-King captioned the post. “They bought two @costco cakes, cut them, stacked them, re-iced with buttercream icing, and covered with $10 @traderjoes flowers. Boom a $50 DIY Cake!”
Though they did admittedly have the help of an expert, as the bride’s brother-in-law is a British chef and readily accepted the challenge of pulling together a purse-friendly cake.
According to Hoyle-King, the cakes were first cut into tiered squares and then stacked, re-iced and arranged alongside a few flowers.
To display the finished table piece, they used a stand crafted from supplies purchased at Hobby Lobby.

Unsurprisingly, social media users were blown away by the creation and took to the post to share their enthusiasm.
“This is so creative and thrifty,” one wrote. “Love everything you shared.”
Another agreed, adding: “I am so stealing this idea for when I eventually get married. It’s not going to look anywhere as beautiful as that cake but if it saves me money I’m down to try!”
