Bride claims fiancé dumped her days before wedding after brain cancer made her gain five stone
A bride who was diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour has claimed her fiancé dumped her over Facebook Messenger just days before their wedding.
Emily Nicholson, 24, was working as bar manager and club promoter before she was diagnosed with astrocytoma brain cancer in February 2016.
Almost a year later, Emily received the devastating news she only had a year to live so she and then-boyfriend Jamie Smith, 24, decided to tie the knot as soon as they could, but had to wait until the following March while Emily received treatment.
Before she became ill Emily weighed seven stone and wore a slender size six, but the steroids she was put on to treat her condition caused her to gain five stone in weight in six weeks.
Emily believes her weight gain played a part in her fiancé’s decision to end their engagement just a week before their wedding.
“Jamie messaged me and said he didn’t want to be with me and he hadn’t loved me for a long time,” she says.
“It was horrendous. He made it very clear that he didn’t love me. I felt it was because of the way I looked and what had happened.”
Emily, who had also discussed freezing her eggs so she could later have IVF with Jamie if she recovered continued: “We were looking to build our lives together in the time we had left.”
But her former fiancé has refuted her story that he instigated the split, claiming it was actually Emily who left him.
“It was the other way around, she actually left me, I never left her,” he said.
“And, secondly, I never left her for anything to do with her weight gain. If that was the case I would have left her months before we split up, because she started putting weight on before that. It had nothing to do with that at all.”
Though initially devastated Emily, says she’s now come to terms with what happened.
“Now I don’t feel anything about him, he hurt me but there’s no point getting upset over it, I’ve just had to be strong about it all.”
Following her diagnosis, Emily, who had relocated to Australia, decided to return back to the UK with her family in July 2017.
She has already defied the life expectancy given to her by doctor’s but no one knows how long she’ll have left.
Her family have now set up a Go Fund Me page to raise money for Emily so that she can access pioneering immunotherapy vaccine in Germany which will cost £30,000.
According to The Brain Tumour Charity astrocytomas are the most common type of primary brain tumour within the group of brain tumours called gliomas.
“Primary means they have originated from the brain instead of spreading from elsewhere. About one third of all brain tumours diagnosed in the UK are astrocytomas,” the site explains.
“They grow from a type of cell in the brain called an astrocyte, which is the most abundant cell in the brain. They support and protect the neurons (nerves) and help to pass messages between them. Astrocytes, therefore, are vital in processing information in the brain.”
Emily isn’t the only bride-to-be who found herself cancelling her wedding just days before. Last week a nearly-wed was left distraught after finding her partner’s Tinder profile just two days before their big day.
Meanwhile in other bridal news, a bride-to-be’s ‘save the date’ has gone viral after she asked guests to take a fortnight off work for her destination wedding.
It doesn’t end there, however, the soon-to-be-wed also asked her guests to save almost almost £3,000 to attend the three-day-long nuptials and cover the cost of the trip.
And last month, a bride asked her wedding party to dress in a weight-based dress code. Women above 160 pounds and men above 200 pounds were requested to wear black or camouflage.
