The blue light from your phone could be ageing your skin
Turns out, Instagram stalking into the early hours of the morning isn’t just detrimental for your mental wellbeing but could also be responsible for ageing your skin.
According to new research, too much exposure to High Energy Visible Light (which is radiated from phones and laptops) can accelerate the ageing process.
And although there is not yet evidence to support the theory that, like ultraviolet lights such as UVA and UVB, blue light can cause skin cancer, studies suggest that the radiation is responsible for hyperpigmentation.
Dr Murad, founder of Murad Skincare, told Refinery29: “Excessive blue light accelerates the oxidation process, causing hyper-pigmentation, its oxidative effects elicit inflammation and damage the skin barrier making it more prone to signs of ageing, increased uneven skin tone, dullness, pigmentation and fine lines and wrinkles.”
But what can be done to prevent premature ageing (if cutting down on your social media habits proves too much of a stretch)?
Well, software programme f.lux may well be worth downloading.
In a bid to help laptop users get a good night’s sleep, the software is designed to filter out blue light and swap it for skin-friendly amber tones on your display screen when it approaches the evening.
While, an SPF-heavy moisturiser will also help tackle the signs of premature ageing.
