The baby loss certificate scheme is now open to all parents who lost a child in early pregnancy, the government has announced.

First introduced in February, the government has now opened the scheme to anyone who suffered a failed pregnancy. Initially, it had only been offered to parents who had experienced a pregnancy loss or miscarriage from 2018 onwards. However, the cut-off date has now been removed.

Any parent who lost a child before 24 weeks, or 28 weeks if the loss happened before October 1992, can now apply.

Every year in the UK, an estimated 250,000 pregnancies end through miscarriage, which is classed as a death before 24 weeks. It is therefore one of the most common pregnancy complications, suffered by approximately one in five women.

How can I apply for a certificate?

If you are experiencing child-loss bereavement, you can request a free baby-loss certificate.

Applicants must be at least 16 and live in England. More than 50,000 of the optional certificates have been issued to date.

If a baby is born dead after 24 weeks, it is officially registered as a stillborn.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting said the loss of a child during pregnancy 'can be deeply distressing - there is so much love and so many dreams for the future wrapped up in a tiny life'.

'I'm pleased we can now ensure all parents are able to apply for these certificates, no matter how long ago they lost their pregnancies', he continued. 'This government will always listen to women and families as we overhaul our health system to ensure everyone gets compassionate, safe and personalised care.'

Chief executive of the Miscarriage Association Vicki Robinson said the charity had been 'extremely keen to see the scheme extended.'

'Today marks a significant milestone for those who have waited for this recognition,' she continued. 'We know how much the certification scheme has helped those who have experienced pregnancy loss, so this is great news that people whose losses were previously not acknowledged now can be.'
