Christopher Bailey leaves Burberry: The legacy the designer's leaving behind
Today, Burberry announced that president and chief creative officer Christopher Bailey will be stepping down in 2018.
Officially leaving his post in March next year (although he will assist CEO Marco Gobbetti until December 2018), Bailey will leave behind a 17-year legacy at the British heritage brand. The designer hasn’t confirmed the reason behind his departure nor where he will be working next.
“It has been the great privilege of my working life to be at Burberry, working alongside and learning from such an extraordinary group of people over the last 17 years. Burberry encapsulates so much of what is great about Britain,” the designer said in a statement.
“It has been a truly inspiring place to work and the decision to leave was not an easy one. I do truly believe, however, that Burberry’s best days are still ahead of her and that the company will go from strength to strength. I am excited to pursue new creative projects but remain fully committed to the future success of this magnificent brand and to ensuring a smooth transition.”
Not only was Bailey responsible for Burberry’s soaring profits, the 46-year-old is also credited with transforming the label into a digital powerhouse, pioneering the ‘see now, buy now’ movement and utilising social media platforms like Snapchat.
In charge of over 50 Burberry collections a year encompassing all ready-to-wear, accessories, beauty and fragrance, Bailey’s talent will be sorely missed in the fashion industry.
After all, he was responsible for turning London into a global fashion hub, transforming London Fashion Week into somewhere that attracts top editors, celebrities, models and other talent.
Here are some of Christopher Bailey’s biggest Burberry achievements.
