10-year-old teaches important lesson about trans people with sign
Just days ago, President Donald Trump revoked previously-established guidance allowing trans kids to use the bathroom that corresponds to their gender identity in the US.
And as the resulting debate about it rages on on Twitter, Facebook and beyond, the main argument for forbidding trans women and men – but especially the former – from doing so is the idea that they’ll be dangerous to the cis women they share bathrooms with.
Forgive me, guys. I have to be a gushing mom for a moment. This 10 year old girl stood up yesterday at a microphone in…

Cue Rebekah, a transgender girl who has something to say about that, as a photo of her holding a sign reading “I’m the scary transgender person the media warned you about” has become incredibly popular online.
Last weekend, the 10-year-old spoke at a rally against discrimination towards transgender students in the public school system.

Her mum, Jamie Bruesehoff, told The Huffington Post that Rebekah has been living as her female self since she was aged eight, having suffered crippling depression as a result of being assigned male at birth.
“We had a 7-year-old child in crisis,” she said.
“With the help of some excellent professionals and a lot of learning, we all came to realise she wasn’t a boy. She was a girl.”

“Transgender youth are at incredibly high risk for depression, anxiety, and even suicide,” Bruesehoff continued.
“It’s not because there is something wrong with them; it’s because something is wrong our society.

“The research shows one key thing changes those statistics: support. It is very clear that students who are supported in their homes, their schools, and their communities have a very different experience than those who are not.
“Every child deserves to safely, and with dignity, access an education. Transgender rights are human rights.”
