Tom Hiddleston promises 'a departure' in the new Loki series

Tom Hiddleston clearly has to keep shtum about the new Loki TV series for Disney, but the British star has let a little slip.

He will reprise the role of the anti-hero trickster of Asgard for the Mouse House's new streaming channel, Disney+.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at the Shanghai International Film Festival, he said: “All I can tell you is that it is called Loki. It is a new departure... but I can’t explain why.”

Now, we may be reading too much into this, but his use of the word 'departure', with its travel connotations, could be telling here.

Rumours among MCU fans is that the show will find Loki using the Tesseract he absconded with in Avengers: Endgame, when Tony Stark and Captain America's initial plan goes awry.

This means he could be bouncing around all manner of time zones, like a latter day Quantum Leap, and a recent snap from the series would back this up.

At a Disney investors presentation a few weeks back, some of the first visuals were shown to shareholders, one being for Loki.

It saw Hiddleston in what appeared to be New York, with Jaws appearing at a cinema in the background, which would put the action round 1975.

But with the actor remaining tight-lipped, we may not know for some time whether this is the premise for the show or not.

Either way, Loki will join a number of new Marvel projects set to premiere on Disney+.

Scarlett Witch and Vision will be getting their own series, as will Falcon and the Winter Soldier, while it sounds like Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye will appearing in a show which sounds likely to set up his protege Kate Bishop as the Avengers' new archer.

Disney+ will launch in America on November 12, but a UK launch date still remains TBC.
