In a statement, 30 Rock creator Fey said: “I’m very excited to bring Mean Girls back to the big screen.
“It’s been incredibly gratifying to see how much the movie and the musical have meant to audiences. I’ve spent 16 years with these characters now. They are my Marvel Universe and I love them dearly.”
The original movie, penned by former Saturday Night Live writer Fey and directed by Mark Waters, landed in 2004.
It found Rachel McAdams as the leader of the 'Plastics', the cliquey, high school 'mean girls' of the title, who tussle with new arrival Cady, played by Lindsay Lohan.
It was a hit at the box office, making $129 million from its modest $17 million budget, and quickly became a cult classic of the genre.
The musical, which follows the movie's plot, was adapted by Fey herself, with the music coming from her husband, composer Jeff Richmond.
Since premiering in Washington D.C. in 2017, it moved to Broadway in 2018, where it was nominated for all the major Tony Awards, and winning a Drama Desk award for Outstanding Book of a Musical.
The show will move to the West End in 2021.
