The Marvels Easter eggs and cameos explained

The Marvels is out in cinemas now, bringing a new chapter in Captain Marvel, Ms Marvel and Monica Rambeau's lives for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Starring Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani as Carol Danvers, Monica and Kamala Khan respectively, the film sees the trio team up in order to face villain Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton) as she wreaks havoc across the galaxy in order to try and save her home planet of Hala.

While these characters are the main event, fans are no doubt hoping to learn more about Easter eggs and cameos that appear in the film.

Here is everything you need to know, but be warned this article contains spoilers.

Who makes a cameo in The Marvels?

The Marvels features a number of actors in the line-up but there are a few familiar faces from the MCU who fans will be delighted to see turn up in the film.

Early in the film, Carol, Monica and Kamala help a group of Skrull refugees escape their former colony after Dar-Benn decides to strip the planet of oxygen to help her people breathe. In order to find a new home for them, Carol enlists the help of a good friend.

That friend is none other than Valkyrie, played by Tessa Thompson, who arrives on Captain Marvel's ship by way of a bifrost bridge and then she takes the Skrull people back with her to Earth, where she can hopefully find them a home in New Asgard.

The next big cameo comes at the end of the film when Hailee Steinfeld reprises her role as Kate Bishop, the plucky young hero set to take up Hawkeye's mantle after her first appearance on the Disney+ series.

Kate comes home after a night of crimefighting to find Kamala in her living room, who tells her that she is forming a team of young superheroes like her — the Young Avengers.

There is also a major cameo in the post-credit scene, which sees Lashana Lynch return as Maria Rambeau as well. The scene features Kelsey Grammer as Dr Hank McCoy, aka Beast, from X-Men.

Kamala's superhero obsessions

It's no secret that Kamala is a huge fan of superheroes, and her room is full of references and Easter eggs to other heroes from the MCU including Iron Man, Thor, and of course Captain Marvel.

Cosmi-Rod

The hammer that Dar-Benn is seen to be using is in fact the Cosmi-Rod which was first seen in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1.

Lee Pace’s villain Ronan used the weapon in the film and it seems to have gotten into Dar-Benn’s hands after the events of the movie.

The annihilator nickname

Captain Marvel is called The Annihilator by the Kree, a nickname that she earned after she took down the Supreme Intelligence in her solo movie.

The name is a reference to a group known as The Annihilators who were led by Ronan in the comics.

Dead Poets Society

One thing Marvel fans may not have expected from the superhero genre is that it would make reference to Dead Poets Society but it does.

Kamala references the film when she witnesses a particularly brilliant move from captain Marvel, saying “Oh captain, my captain” in her euphoria.
