'The Gentlemen' trailer: Matthew McConaughey and Henry Golding face off in Guy Ritchie's gangster comedy

Guy Ritchie is back in the gangster arena.

The filmmaker, known for cult British hits Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, has penned a new crime caper called The Gentlemen and the cast is packed with big names.

Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Henry Golding, Michelle Dockery, Jeremy Strong, Eddie Marsan, Colin Farrell, Hugh Grant, Jason Wong, Brittany Ashworth, Eliot Sumner, Lyne Renée and, Chris Evangelou are amongst the named cast.

The story follows American expat Mickey Pearson (McConaughey) who built a highly profitable marijuana empire in London.

When word gets out that he’s looking to cash out of the business forever it triggers plots, schemes, bribery, and blackmail in an attempt to steal his domain out from under him.

Golding is the main antagonist of the film and judging by the trailer, and his accent, Grant is the comic relief.

Hunnam’s character seems to have taken over the Jason Statham “straight man” role in the film as Raymond, someone who works for Mickey and gets caught up in the violent drama.

The Gentlemen comes 12 years after Ritchie’s last outing in the gangster genre via 2008’s RocknRolla, which earned mixed reviews.

He was recently credited as the director of Aladdin, the Disney live-action remake, which earned over $1 billion at the box office.

It’s unclear at this point if he will direct the sequel but producer Dan Lin hopes to reunite the cast and crew.

“We want to bring our key crew and collaborators back for the next one,” he told Yahoo Movies UK.

The Gentlemen is scheduled to be released on January 1, 2020, by Entertainment Film Distributors.
