New Spider-Man: Homecoming posters showcase a relaxed Marvel Comics icon
Clearly, no one’s stressing out about how to sell ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming.’
For the longest time, the idea of Marvel’s iconic wall-crawler joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe seemed like nothing but a pipe dream, given that Sony held the Spidey screen rights. However, after the critical and commercial disappointment of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2,’ Sony and Marvel made a groundbreaking deal to share the rights to the character, meaning that Marvel’s arguably best-loved superhero could at last come home (hence ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’).
After young British actor Tom Holland’s scene-stealing introduction in ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ the upcoming ‘Homecoming’ will see him headline his first solo feature in the role, for which the first official poster has just been released – and it’s quite the contrast to the bold action shots we usually expect to see superhero movies sold with:
The message is clear: everybody relax, your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man is exactly where he’s meant to be (note the Avengers tower in the NYC backdrop).
Still, just in case you prefer your superheroes that bit more energetic, this alternate poster is a more conventional option (you might also note that the Avengers tower shows up again):
Either way, these images point toward something a bit more youthful, energetic and colourful than we’ve had from the last few ‘Spider-Man’ movies – and if Holland can be as entertaining for two hours as he was for his 30-ish minutes of screentime in ‘Civil War,’ we should be in for a blast.
Directed by Jon Watts (‘Cop Car’), ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ also sees the return of Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, Jon Favreau as Happy and Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark/Iron Man, with Micheal Keaton as bad guy The Vulture, and Zendaya as Michelle (who may or may not turn out to be the new Mary-Jane).
Look out for it in UK cinemas from 7 July.
