Sky Cinema and NOW September 2022: New movies and TV from 'This England' to 'Brassic'

It's a big month for Kenneth Branagh on Sky Cinema and NOW, with his portrayal of the outgoing prime minister Boris Johnson taking centre stage in This England. The drama from Michael Winterbottom follows Johnson during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Elsewhere, Branagh's Oscar-winning movie Belfast is also available on Sky and NOW this month.

On the TV front, there are some big returns this time around, with Brassic back on screens for its fourth series and Never Mind the Buzzcocks delivering a second series of its rebooted run. Football fans will also be thrilled to see cult series Fantasy Football League return, with a pair of new hosts.

New movies on Sky Cinema and NOW in September 2022

After Yang (22 September)

Korean-American filmmaker Kogonada delivers his sophomore feature with After Yang, which follows a family's attempt to repair their daughter's companion — the titular android.

Colin Farrell and Jodie Turner-Smith play the central couple, with Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja as their adoptive daughter and Justin H. Min as Yang.

New TV on Sky and NOW in September 2022

Bloods S2, part 2 (1 September)

The travails of a group of London paramedics again take centre stage as Bloods returns for five more episodes of its second series. Jane Horrocks and Samson Kayo lead an ensemble cast of British comedy veterans, including Lucy Punch, Adrian Scarborough and Julian Barratt.

Forged in Fire S9 (1 September)

This competition series returns with another selection of bladesmiths competing to create the best weapons for a panel of experts and win $10,000 (£8,500) in the process.

The American Presidency with Bill Clinton (2 September)

Bill Clinton fronts this six-part series in which his experience as a previous incumbent of the White House provides him with an ideal perspective to examine what the presidency means in modern America.

The Slow Mo Guys' Big Adventures (2 September)

With their slow-motion cameras, the duo behind this show have amassed more than 14 million subscribers on YouTube. In this series, they continue their premise of their online content, with the addition of historical animations contributed by Horrible Histories creator Terry Deary.

TrollsTopia S2 (2 September)

The ultra-colourful pep of the Trolls franchise is back on the small screen for another run of spin-off TrollsTopia. Relationships between the tribes are in a good place in this season, until Poppy realises she has unwittingly excluded an entire tribe from their new world.

1972: Munich's Black September (4 September)

This documentary explores the events of the Munich Olympic massacre from three perspectives: the victims, the police officers and the assassins responsible. It's pieced together using fresh interviews and a wealth of archive footage.

Alexander the Great (4 September)

The historical impact of Alexander the Great — one of Europe's most legendary rulers — is the subject of this documentary, which explores every facet of his life and legacy.

Mind Over Murder (4 September)

In 1989, six people were found guilty of the rape and murder of Helen Wilson. This six-part documentary explores the way the Beatrice Six subsequently struggled for freedom and ultimately secured exonerations in 2009, with their confessions rubbished and new DNA evidence clearing them of wrongdoing.

No Room for Ravers: The Story of the Small Faces (4 September)

Four-piece rock outfit Small Faces are considered to be one of the defining voices of British mod culture in the 1960s. This documentary special delves into their rise and fall, with talking head contributions from music royalty including Pete Townshend and Rod Stewart.

American Pickers S19 (5 September)

Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz return to unearth more treasures in the garages and garden sheds of America, digging through the scrap to find the hidden gems.

Brassic S4 (7 September)

The cast of Sky's most successful comedy are back for a fourth series of chaos, with all of the characters back in Hawley and trouble inevitably set to find them. Joseph Gilgun and Michelle Keegan lead a cast packed with comedy talent.

Curse of Skinwalker Ranch S3 (7 September)

For more than 200 years, the titular Utah ranch has been talked about as a hotspot for potential alien activity. In this new series, the ranch allows full access and people are able to venture underground for the first time in order to see whether there's a rational explanation for it all.

Sky Arts Book Club S3 (7 September)

Presenters Andi Oliver and Elizabeth Day are joined by authors and book clubs as they discuss literature an offer recommendations. The first episode of the new series sees Reverend Richard Coles appear on the show to chat about his new novel Murder Before Evensong.

The Russell Howard Hour S6 (8 September)

Comedian Russell Howard has spent the last decade or so bringing his askew vision of the world to the screen, first through Russell Howard's Good News and then, more recently, through The Russell Howard Hour. That show is now back for its sixth series, combining topical material with offbeat observations.

Munich Games S1 (9 September)

This thriller series marks the 50th anniversary of the Munich Olympics attack. It follows a secret service team who are on high alert for a friendly football match between an Israeli and German team, designed as a memorial to those who were killed. Before the match, a Mossad agent and German police officer intercept a message on the dark web and must work together to avert another tragedy.

9/11: The Legacy (11 September)

Marking 21 years since the terrorist attack in New York City, this documentary interviews young survivors who are now in adulthood and recounts their resilience in the wake of the horrifying events.

The Loneliest Whale (11 September)

The "52-Hertz Whale" was first discovered in the 1980s and is believed to have spent its whole life in solitude due to calling at a frequency different to all other whales. This documentary follows a group of scientists attempting to actually become the first people to see the creature in the flesh.

An Unexpected Killer S3 (12 September)

This true crime show returns for another series invites viewers to follow along with homicide investigators as they work to solve a complex and surprising murder case.

Britain's Greatest Obsessions (12 September)

This six-part series sees half a dozen different celebrities front a journey into a world in which they are an expert, starting with comedian Harry Hill leading an exploration of the British sense of humour.

Never Mind the Buzzcocks S2 (13 September)

Music-based panel show Never Mind the Buzzcocks returned to screens last year after a lengthy period in the wilderness. Greg Davies is now the full-time host, with Daisy May Cooper, Noel Fielding and Jamali Maddix joined by an array of revolving guests from the world of comedy, music and TV.

Vampire Academy S1 (16 September)

Richelle Mead's series of young adult novels already became a movie in 2014, but they're now heading to the small screen. Vampire Academy follows a young ensemble cast's many adventures and misadventures at the unique boarding school St Vladimir's Academy.

This England (21 September)

Few of us want to return to the uncertainty and turmoil of early 2020, but this new drama series from Michael Winterbottom does just that. It aims to unpick the political wrangling that shaped the UK's reaction to COVID-19, with Kenneth Branagh undergoing a remarkable physical transformation to play Boris Johnson. Ophelia Lovibond portrays Johnson's wife Carrie, with Broadchurch star Andrew Buchan as Matt Hancock.

Fantasy Football League (TBC September)

Several decades after David Baddiel and Frank Skinner said goodbye to their football series, it is set to be back on screens with comedians Ellis James and Matt Lucas providing their spin on the beautiful game. They will be joined by celebrity guests to compete in a fantasy football challenge, as well as chatting about all things Premier League and beyond.
