'Russian Doll' creator is working on a female-centric 'Star Wars' series for Disney+

Leslye Headland, co-creator and showrunner of Netflix series Russian Doll, is working on a female-centric Star Wars series for Disney+.

Variety reports that Headland will serve as showrunner and writer for the new show, which will be set in a different part of the timeline to other Star Wars projects such as The Mandalorian.

No further details have currently been released about the plot of the series.

Headland’s series is the fourth Star Wars project currently in development for Disney+, with shows based on Obi-Wan Kenobi and Rogue One’s Cassian Andor on the way alongside The Mandalorian, which was this week renewed for a third season.

The showrunner is a celebrated playwright, as well as the writer-director of the 2012 film Bachelorette and 2015 romcom Sleeping With Other People.

In 2019, she served as showrunner for time loop comedy Russian Doll, which she co-created with star Natasha Lyonne and Amy Poehler.

The first season became one of Netflix’s most popular shows and production on the second season was in full swing until the coronavirus pandemic caused shooting to halt.

The announcement of Headland’s new Star Wars series is part of Disney’s plan to prioritise the television side of the galaxy far, far away.

Disney boss Bob Iger had previously said he regretted releasing so many Star Wars movies so quickly after the Mouse House purchased Lucasfilm.

Since the Disney+ streaming service launched in the UK, The Mandalorian has proved one of its most popular shows.

The meme popularity of Baby Yoda, as well as the chance for fans to pick themselves up after the divisive Rise of Skywalker, drove subscribers to the platform.

There is currently no release date set for any of the other Star Wars series in development over at Disney+.
