Robert Downey Jr will make more than $75 million from 'Avengers: Endgame'

Robert Downey Jr is set for a payday of more than $75 million (nearly £57.5 million) for his starring turn as Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, his pay cheque is vastly more than that being cashed by his co-stars, thanks to a deal he signed with Marvel Studios boss Kevin Fiege when he first took on the role in the first Iron Man movie 11 years ago.

His eventual pay is linked to the film’s profits, which means that this is his most lucrative turn in the iron suit to date.

Worldwide, the film has made $1.3 billion already, since its release last Thursday, breaking dozens of box office records, and threatening to topple Avatar as the highest-grossing movie of recent times.

The only other Marvel stars with a deal close – but not that close – to Downey Jr’s are Chris Hemsworth, who re-negotiated $15-$20 million per film as Thor in 2017, and Chris Evans, who played Captain America.

Meanwhile, it’s said Scarlett Johansson will earn $20 million for her standalone Black Widow movie, filming next year.

Downey Jr’s career was revived with the role in Jon Favreau’s Iron Man in 2008, which kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

He’s gone on to appear in 10 other films as the billionaire playboy Tony Stark, though he was uncredited in The Incredible Hulk.

Famously, he made a staggering $5 million per day for his brief appearances in Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017.

But now his watch has ended, with Stark saving the world but succumbing to the power of the Infinity Stones at the end of Endgame, bringing Downey Jr’s mammoth paydays at Marvel to a close.

But what lies in store for the actor now that he’s hung up his Iron Man helmet and JARVIS has been powered down?

He’s set to star with Jamie Foxx in the sports comedy-drama All-Star Weekend, which Foxx has written and is also directing.

That’s followed by the big budget The Voyage of Dr Dootlittle for Universal Pictures, in which he’ll play the doctor who can talk to animals, alongside a stunning cast including Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen, Jim Broadbent, John Cena, Marion Cottilard, Ralph Fiennes, Tom Holland, Octavia Spencer, Emma Thompson and Rami Malek.

It’s due out in January, 2020.
