Paramount+ UK October 2022: New movies and TV from 'Significant Other' to 'Star Trek: Prodigy'

The October offering on Paramount+ UK is headlined by a new Star Trek animated series and a new spin on the Swedish vampire story Let the Right One In. There's also a true crime docuseries, exploring a uniquely shocking and sinister telephone scam.

There are also some intriguing feature-length additions to the streaming platform, including the charming Olivia Colman movie Joyride after its cinema release earlier this year. When it comes to original films, the highlight is Significant Other — a chilling survival tale about a backpacking couple who are targeted by an alien entity.

New movies coming to Paramount+ UK in October 2022

On the Come Up (1 October)

Jamila C. Gray leads this drama as a teenage rapper attempting to climb the ranks of the battle rap community as a tribute to her father, who was a hip-hop star until gang violence cut his career tragically short. Her commitment to earnest authenticity, though, is tested when her first song goes viral and she has to fight attempts to commodify and alter her persona.

A Life Too Short (5 October)

Qandeel Baloch was killed in July 2016, just a few years after she became Pakistan's first social media celebrity. This documentary explores her rise to fame as well as her interactions with a senior Muslim cleric, which prompted controversy and death threats, and the subsequent reaction to her killing.

Monster High (7 October)

Clawdeen Wolf was born half-human and half-werewolf, which has made it very difficult for her to fit in anywhere. When she arrives at new school Monster High, it's actually her human side she has to keep secret and, initially, she thinks she's found her people. However, a plot from someone who wants to bring down the school means her secret could come out.

Significant Other (8 October)

Horror specialist Maika Monroe — of It Follows and The Guest fame — is joined by The White Lotus breakout star Jake Lacy in this dark sci-fi chiller. They play a couple on a backpacking journey through the Pacific Northwest, which takes a very sinister turn when they begin to realise that they might not be alone.

Monroe has previously worked with the film's directing duo Dan Berk and Robert Olsen on the 2019 horror movie Villains.

Joyride (21 October)

Released in UK cinemas earlier this year and now arriving to stream on Paramount+, this film follows Olivia Colman as a mother who finds herself on a road trip with a teen who nicks the taxi she was riding in. Their relationship is initially antagonistic but, naturally, they bond as they travel together across Ireland.

New TV shows coming to Paramount+ UK in October 2022

Coyote (available as boxset from 3 October)

Michael Chiklis leads this well-reviewed US drama series about a recently retired border patrol agent who finds himself on the other side of the law and in a moral quandary when he helps a young, pregnant girl cross into the States from Mexico.

Let the Right One In (available weekly from 8 October)

Swedish filmmaker Tomas Alfredson's 2008 film adaptation of the novel Let the Right One In became one of the most celebrated horror movies of the noughties, spawning a US remake starring Kodi Smit-McPhee and Chloë Grace Moretz.

It is now being given another spin in this TV series, in which Demián Bichir plays the father of a 12-year-old girl (Madison Taylor Baez) who has been turned into a vampire — and whom he is trying to keep secret from the world.

The Ex-Wife (available as boxset from 12 October)

Downton Abbey writer Catherine Steadman has penned this psychological thriller series about a woman whose perfect existence is challenged by the fact her husband's ex-wife won't leave them alone and seems intent on ruining their lives. It's based on Jess Ryder's 2018 novel of the same name.

Love Rats (episodes 1-4 available on 14 October)

The world of modern dating provides fertile ground for scammers and con artists, as anyone who saw this year's Netflix documentary The Tinder Swindler will know well. This documentary series explores the stories of victims who were exploited by those who dangled the prospect of love in front of them, including online scammers, bigamists and catfish.

Chapelwaite (available daily from 19 October)

Adrien Brody and Schitt's Creek star Emily Hampshire lead this thriller series, adapted from a Stephen King short story. It's a Gothic mystery tale set in a sleepy Maine town, where Brody relocates his family after the death of his wife in an accident at sea. Soon, family mysteries begin to unravel as skeletons tumble out of closets while Hampshire's budding writer is there to behold the darkness.

Pervert: Hunting the Strip Search Caller (available as boxset from 25 October)

In 2012, director Craig Zobel's harrowing thriller Compliance told the story of a fast food worker in Kentucky who was subjected to sexual humiliation after a hoax phone caller posing as a police officer convinced her manager to perform increasingly horrifying acts. That same case is explored in this true crime series, which follows the rookie detective who made it his mission to track down the man behind a spate of similar spam calls.

Hauntings (available as boxset from 28 October)

This anthology series delves into some of the most convincing cases of hauntings in British and American history, including the famous tale of the Enfield Poltergeist. Each episode focuses on a different case, exploring the events and whether they stand up to scrutiny.

Star Trek: Prodigy (available weekly from 28 October)

The first Star Trek series aimed directly at children, Prodigy tells the story of six aliens who commandeer a starship and must work together in order to pilot it. Over time, they are introduced to Starfleet and its ideas about space exploration.
