Disney+ UK October 2022: New movies and TV shows from 'The Walking Dead' to 'Werewolf By Night'

It's spooky season on Disney+ UK this month, and even the Marvel Cinematic Universe is getting in on the act with one-off horror special Werewolf By Night. There's a bigger scary series in town though, as The Walking Dead brings its 11-season zombie odyssey to an end.

On the original movie front, there's a decidedly non-scary new spin on William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet in the comedy film Rosaline. But not to worry, horror hounds, there's also Grimcutty — a supernatural slasher about an internet meme that becomes very real indeed.

Original movies coming to Disney+ UK in October 2022

Rosaline (14 October)

Kaitlyn Dever leads the cast of this comedy film as the title character, whose cousin (Isabela Merced) happens to be the titular woman from Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. And worse than that, Romeo (Kyle Allen) is her ex, so she's less than pleased when their love story gets moving.

Based on a YA novel, the movie is directed by Karen Maine — whose last film was the excellent Yes, God, Yes — and written by the duo behind (500) Days of Summer. The cast also includes Bradley Whitford and Minnie Driver.

Grimcutty (TBC October)

Inspired by the moral panics around the entirely overblown "Momo challenge" and, of course, the endearing king of creepypasta Slender Man, Grimcutty is a supernatural horror about a villainous internet meme. Set in a quiet suburban world, it tells the story of a spat of deaths connected to the titular online character, which purportedly has the power to convince those who play its game to murder their family members.

Original TV shows coming to Disney+ UK in October 2022

The Walking Dead S11 (weekly from 3 October)

The third of the three blocks of The Walking Dead's final season are set to start airing this month, bringing an end to the zombie-themed survival drama after more than a decade. Norman Reedus retains his lead role, with Jeffrey Dean Morgan also still kicking around as the former ultimate baddie Negan.

The Bear (5 October)

Set in Chicago, this series takes place in the high-stress atmosphere of the restaurant world. Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White) has returned home to the city after years in the landscape of fine dining and is now tasked with taking over the running of his family's struggling sandwich shop due to the death of his brother. The series depicts him wrangling with the realities of his new business, as well as his familial relationships.

Grey's Anatomy S18 (5 October)

The most unstoppable medical programme on US television continues to roll on and will again explore the web of doctors and patients that make up its central cast, with the impact of COVID-19 very much still at play in this world. Ellen Pompeo is also back to lead the ensemble cast as Dr Meredith Grey.

Grey's Anatomy S19 (26 October)

Disney+ confirmed that season 19 of Grey’s Anatomy, from executive producer Shonda Rhimes, will launch exclusively on the streaming service in the UK on 26 October.

The new season joins all previous seasons of the hit medical drama, which are available on Disney+ in the UK making Disney+ the home of Grey’s Anatomy.

Picking up six months after the season 18 finale, season 19 sees five new interns join the staff at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, with Harry Shum Jr., Adelaide Kane, Alexis Floyd, Niko Terho, and Midori Francis joining the cast.

Werewolf By Night (7 October)

A very different sort of Marvel show, this. Directed by renowned movie score composer Michael Giacchino, this is a monochrome homage to the "old dark house" style of vintage horror film.

Gael García Bernal plays the titular lycanthrope alongside a group of monster hunters and, apparently, members of Loki's Time Variance Authority. Things are set to get very strange and, although it seems self-contained, don't be surprised if there are nods to the past and future of the MCU.

Big Shot (12 October)

John Stamos returns for a second crack at this comedy-drama series about a quintessential sporting underdog story. The first season saw Stamos's basketball coach sacked from a high-profile college gig and tasked with changing the fortunes of a girls' team at a high school. This time around, he's planning to get the team national exposure via a scheme to get them on ESPN.

Candy (12 October)

Set in 1980s Texas, this true crime limited series stars Jessica Biel in the title role as a housewife and mother who is accused of the brutal murder of her neighbour. The ensemble cast also includes Halo star Pablo Schreiber, Melanie Lynskey and Justin Timberlake. The show premiered earlier this year on Hulu in the USA and drew positive reviews, especially for Biel's performance.

War of the Worlds S3 (19 October)

This sci-fi thriller, loosely adapted from the classic H.G. Wells novel, returns for a third run, with Gabriel Byrne leading the ensemble cast. The third season picks up as a new phase of the war between the human survivors and invading aliens begins and the stakes, naturally, are the continued survival of the entire human race on Earth. No biggie, then.

The Mysterious Benedict Society S2 (26 October)

Tony Hale returns as Mr Nicholas Benedict for a second season of this show about gifted orphans recruited to foil an evil plot by their new boss's long-lost twin brother — also played by Hale. This time around, the villainous version of Hale "shifts to a new strategy with global implications", with the society once again working to stop him.

A Sinister Halloween Scary Opposites Solar Special (TBC October)

Alien-based animated series Solar Opposites — about a group of extra-terrestrials who can't decide whether humanity is awesome or awful — returns for this spooky special, with the official announcement using the logline "sometimes, alien life can be spooky".
