Oscars 2021 poll: Who should win Best Supporting Actress?

On Sunday 25 April, the biggest ceremony of the film awards season will take place - the 2021 Academy Awards.

Best Supporting Actress is is a closely-run race this year, with many surprising nominees. Korean star Yuh-Jung Youn the current favourite to take home the Oscar on the night.

Who will take home the famous golden statuette? Here are the nominees.

Maria Bakalova, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

Newcomer Bakalova plays Tutar Sagdiyev, Borat's teenage daughter. She has already won a Critics’ Choice Award, and was nominated for the BAFTAs, the Golden Globes, and SAG Awards.

Charlotte O'Sullivan has given the comedy five stars in the Evening Standard and hails Bakalova as “the breakout star of the year”.

The Gold Derby has tipped her at 4/1 to take home the Oscar.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm is streaming on Amazon Prime video.

Glenn Close, Hillbilly Elegy

Close plays Bonnie "Mamaw" Vance, after an emergency in the family forces a Yale student to return home to Ohio. The Gold Derby puts her at 4/1 to win her first Oscar.

She was also nominated for the Critics’ Choice Award, the Golden Globes, and SAG Awards in the same category.

Owen Gleiberman writes in Variety that the drama “is never less than alive.”

Hillbilly Elegy is streaming on Netflix.

Olivia Colman, The Father

In this drama about an ageing man with advancing memory loss, Colman plays his daughter, Anne.

In this category she was nominated for a SAG Award, Critics’ Choice Award and the Golden Globes. Benjamin Lee writes of the “impactful moments” she played, giving it four out of five stars in The Guardian.

Her odds in the Gold Derby are currently up at 9/2 to win.

The Father is scheduled for UK release on 11th June 2021.

Amanda Seyfried, Mank

In this 1930s Hollywood biographical drama, Mank tells the story of screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz and director Orson Welles as they worked on the Citizen Kane script. Seyfried plays Broadway actress Marion Davies.

Her performance earned her nominations in the same category for the Critics’ Choice Awards and Golden Globes, and Peter Bradshaw has given it five stars in the Guardian, calling it a “heartfelt, irresistibly watchable film.”

Her chances stand at 9/2 in the Gold Derby, and Mank is available now on Netflix.

Yuh-Jung Youn, Minari

The first Korean actress to be nominated for an acting category at the Oscars is currently the top choice, with her odds up at 16/5 to win in the industry awards predictors, the Gold Derby.

Youn plays the grandmother, Soonja, in Lee Isaac Chung's Minari, following a Korean family starting a farm in 1980s Arkansas in search of a new life after moving from California. It has also been nominated for Best Picture.

The actress won a BAFTA and a SAG Award for her performance, available to watch on digital rental.

Terri White has given it five stars in an Empire review, describing Youn as “utterly delightful”.
