Who will take home the famous golden statuette? Here are the nominees.
Daniel Kaluuya, Judas And The Black Messiah
Kaluuya won the same category at the BAFTAs, Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice awards for playing Fred Hampton, who led the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party and was assassinated in 1969.
In his Guardian review Mark Kermode praised Kaluuya's Hampton as "steadfast and determined; inspirational in public, unexpectedly shy in person”, giving the drama four out of five stars.
Kaluuya is currently the top choice, tipped at 31/10 by industry awards predictors the Gold Derby, to claim what would be his first Oscar.
Judas and the Black Messiah available now on digital rental.
LaKeith Stanfield, Judas And The Black Messiah
In another nomination for the historical drama, LaKeith Stanfield plays William O’Neal, an FBI informant involved in Hampton’s assassination.
In a Variety review, Peter Debruge writes: “There’s no other actor today quite like Stanfield who turns the cool ambivalence he displayed in Sorry to Bother You into a chilling kind of moral detachment.”
He is currently down at 9/2 to win by Gold Derby.
Sacha Baron Cohen, The Trial Of The Chicago 7
Cohen plays Abbie Hoffman, member of the Chicago 7 and co-founder of the Yippies.
He previously won a SAG Award and was nominated best supporting actor for the Critics’ Choice Awards.
Owen Gleiberman writes in Variety that Cohen “may be a head taller than the real Abbie Hoffman, but he catches the exuberance of Hoffman’s rascal Jewish charisma.”
The odds of him taking home the Oscar are 4/1 according to Gold Derby.

Leslie Odom Jr., One Night In Miami
The double Oscar nominee plays Sam Cooke in an account of icons including Muhammad Ali and Malcom X discussing the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement.
Given five stars by Empire, Ellen E Jones writes that “the coming together [of these icons]...is the Avengers Assemble of civil rights-era Black excellence.”
Odom is down at 9/2 to win on Gold Derby.
One Night In Miami is available on Amazon Prime video.
Paul Raci, Sound Of Metal
In this film, heavy-metal drummer Ruben Stone (Riz Ahmed) begins to lose his hearing, while Raci plays Joe, a deafened and recovering alcoholic running a shelter for other deaf alcoholics.
Given five stars in the Guardian, Mark Kermode writes that Raci “brilliantly played” his part.
Sound of Metal is available on Amazon Prime.
Raci is down at 9/2 to win, according to Gold Derby.
