Olivia Newton-John blasts Grease 2, laughs off dead Sandy fan theory
38 years on, people still can’t stopasking Olivia Newton-John about ‘Grease’ – and now, the actress and singer has given her thoughts on the divisive sequel.
Almost none of the original 1978 film’s cast returned for 1982’s ‘Grease 2,’ which saw a new class at Rydell High – including an early leading role for Michelle Pfeiffer.
But audiences were nowhere near as enamoured with the follow-up – and it seems Newton-John wasn’t either.

Appearing earlier this week on US TV show Watch What Happens Live, the Sandy star was asked what she thought of ‘Grease 2,’ and her response was brief but to the point: “Not a lot.”
Nor are these the only ‘Grease’-related thoughts the 68-year old star has imparted in recent days, as in another interview on AOL, she gave her thoughts on the ‘dead Sandy’ theory which resurfaced recently.
The theory suggests that Sandy drowned in the film’s opening, and her experiences at Rydell High are a fantasy as she makes her way to Heaven – hence the car flying away at the end.
“I laughed… I thought it was hilarious. I thought it was also wonderful that people were still talking about it all these years later.
“I thought, ‘If that’s the case, then we were the first zombie musical, and we look pretty good considering!‘”
Newton-John concludes, “It’s so far from reality because that’s not what it was, but I think it’s a hilarious theory.”
‘Grease’ writer Jim Jacobs trashed the idea recently, declaring “whoever made up that theory must have been on acid.”
