The new Thor: Ragnarok trailer has a LOT of Easter eggs
‘Thor: Ragnarok’ director Taika Waititi clearly loves comic books, and you only have to dig into the new trailer to find out how much.
It’s been online for around 24 hours, and intrepid Marvel fans are already finding impressive Easter eggs in the ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ trailer. And that means plenty of comic book references for the nerdiest fans to dig their teeth into.
Oh, and there’s even the odd meme, too.

It’s one of Marvel’s most exciting new trailers – ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ completely changes the tone of what we should expect to see in a ‘Thor’ movie. It’s colourful, it’s energetic, and at times it’s downright psychedelic.
And it’s filled with Easter eggs. Watch it again below.
Here’s what we noticed so far:
Skurge the Executioner Comic Book Panel
‘Thor: Ragnarok’ director Taika Waititi has taken plenty of inspiration from the comic books… and that’s most obvious when you see Skurge the Executioner, played by Karl Urban.
It’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shot, but Skurge is seen unloading a pair of M-16s – the Earth assault rifles he used in the comic books to hold the bridge of Gjallerbru as Thor and his pals made their escape.
The best part? It happens to be when Skurge the Executioner dies. Does this tease a similar demise for Karl Urban’s big screen Executioner? And will he end up fighting alongside the likes of Thor, Sif and Valkyrie?
Classic Comic Book Designs in the Arena
Another blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, it looks as though The Grandmaster has taken some interior design tips from the Fantastic Four… especially when it comes to the walls of his regal box at Sakaar’s gladiatorial arena.
As you can see, the back walls of The Grandmaster’s box are covered in machine-like designs and patterns… and it turns out these images were lifted directly from an image from the Fantastic Four – with Reed Richards and The Thing working on a machine together.
A nice touch… and a cool tribute to artist, Jack Kirby.
Hela, Goddess of Death gets a comic book costume
Who said comic book costumes would never work on the big screen?
Hela, the Goddess of Death plays a major part in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’. Played by Cate Blanchett, she’s a rather cool take on the classic comic book character. But she soon suits up in her classic costume – as seen in the pages of The Mighty Thor.
As you can see, it’s an almost identical recreation of Hela’s classic comic book costume, which takes centre stage on the cover of The Mighty Thor #150. Horns and all. Now that’s pretty impressive.
Gladiator Hulk gets his awesome Planet Hulk look
It’s been rumoured for some time, but now it’s finally here – Planet Hulk is heading to the big screen… albeit as part of ‘Thor: Ragnarok’. The classic comic book series saw The Hulk get blasted into space, ending up on the gladiatorial planet Sakaar – the planet from ‘Ragnarok’.
Taking to the arena, The Hulk is forced to prove himself.
And he soon ends up donning some impressive gladiator-style armour.
As you can see, the Hulk’s getup in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ is almost identical to the comic book version… again proving that sometimes, a comic book costume looks bloody awesome on the big screen.
Skux Life graffiti nod to Hunt for the Wilderpeople
It’s not all Marvel Easter eggs in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’.
In fact, it looks as though director Taika Waititi has managed to sneak in a cool reference to his earlier movie, ‘The Hunt for the Wilderpeople’ in the form of an impressive graffiti tag.
If you’ve seen ‘The Hunt for the Wilderpeople’, you’ll remember that young Ricky Baker is all about the skux life – kinda like the thug life, but infinitely more awesome. And it looks as though Ricky Baker really does get around, as a ‘Skux Life’ tag is spotted on the walls of the Sakaar arena
Doctor Strange makes an appearance?
It’s no secret that Thor and Doctor Strange are about to cross paths. After all, a post-credits scene in ‘Doctor Strange’ showed Thor on Earth looking for his brother Loki… just before he’s given the address of the Sorcerer Supreme.
But was Doctor Strange by his side when Mjolnir was destroyed?
An extremely quick glimpse of another character can be seen standing next to Thor just as Hela, the Goddess of Death, catches Thor’s hammer… and crushes it to dust. But could it be Doctor Strange?
I can’t help thinking that the robe and hairstyle looks more like his brother, Loki. But the internet is already rife with speculation that it’s in fact, Doctor Strange. Judge for yourself.
‘Thor: Ragnarok’ stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum, Karl Urban and Mark Ruffalo.
Taika Waititi directed the movie based on a script by Eric Pearson.
‘Thor: Ragnarok’ heads to cinemas on 27 October 2017.
