New on Sky and NOW in August 2023: Best movies and TV from M3GAN to Man Called Otto

Given the current strikes and their causes, Sky and NOW’s two biggest new releases in August — AI horror M3GAN and #MeToo drama She Said — couldn’t feel more timely.

Elsewhere, there’s an array of new films inbound, catering to all tastes. For introspective drama, there’s Tom Hanks-starrer A Man Called Otto. And if you like your thought-provocation to have a slightly more indie sci-fi flavour, then afterlife road movie Next Exit could be the one for you.

On the more fantastical side of things, Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves is one for all the family to enjoy, whilst self-explanatory original doc The Man Who Stole The Scream tells a remarkable true story that’s arguably even more unbelievable than the one with literal dragons in it.

Over on the TV front, Greg Davies puts celebs’ music knowledge to the test in Never Mind The Buzzcocks S3, whilst six-part documentary series Classic Movies: The Story of… tells us the story of, well, some classic movies.

Rounding out the month’s TV offerings are the hotly anticipated returns of LA Lakers basketball drama Winning Time, whose second series drops in August, and Heaven-sent workplace comedy Miracle Workers: End Times, which is now heading into its fourth series.

New movies on Sky Cinema and NOW in August 2023

Maggie Moore(s) | 4 August

A bizarre double murder in an otherwise quiet desert town has rattled local Police Chief Jordan Sanders. The two dead women have no connection to each other – except they’re both named Maggie Moore. The investigation gets even more complicated when Jordan begins a romantic relationship with one of the murdered women's neighbour, who is also a witness in the case. Starring Tina Fey, Nick Mohammed and Jon Hamm.

A Man Called Otto | 11 August

A remake of Hannes Holm’s 2015 Swedish film A Man Called Ove, itself based on Fredrik Backman’s best-selling book, A Man Called Otto stars Tom Hanks as a suicidal old man whose attempts on his life are disrupted by the arrival of new neighbours.

Not quite as bleak as its set-up, there’s a rich vein of gallows humour in Marc Forster’s film, which pulls at the heartstrings with its sympathetic examination of elderly loneliness and celebration of human connection.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves | 18 August

A critical hit on release earlier this year, Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves is a rapturous, riotous fantasy romp from the minds behind 2018’s equally brilliant Game Night. This high-octane blockbuster follows the quest of a thieving lutist (Chris Pine) and his ragtag band of adventuring pals as they seek out a lost relic in a world filled with magic and monsters.

Come for the dungeons and the dragons and Regé-Jean Page revealing himself to be a comic genius, stay for a resplendent Hugh Grant hamming it up gleefully as villainous fop Forge and a surprisingly emotional tale of found family, love, and loss.

She Said | 19 August

Two-time Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman) and Emmy nominee Zoe Kazan (The Big Sick) star as New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor in provocative drama She Said. Together, Twohey and Kantor broke the Harvey Weinstein scandal, incurring Hollywood’s #MeToo reckoning and ending an industry-wide silence on the subject of sexual assault and unchallenged rampant misogyny within Tinseltown and beyond. An uneasy, vital viewing experience.

Next Exit | 20 August

Mike Flanagan series alumnus Katie Parker and Rahul Kohli play Teddy and Rose, two unhappy strangers bound together on a road trip across America, in writer-director Mali Elfman’s indie drama Next Exit. The wrinkle? Well, the reason the duo are hitting the road is to partake in a scientific experiment that seems to have proven the existence of the afterlife. Perhaps most accurately described as a melancomedy, given its melancholy-tinged streak of dark humour, for a feature debut this is mightily impressive, poignant work.

Child’s Play’s over, Chucky – there’s a new death-bringing doll on the block and her name is M3GAN! From the moment we first met the murderously loyal emotional support android who gives this chiller its title, it was abundantly clear that horror’s newest icon had arrived. Boasting killer dance moves, biting off bullies’ ears, and being No. 1 bestie to the recently orphaned Cady (Violet McGraw), the AI invention of Cady’s new carer Gemma (Allison Williams) wreaks all kinds of havoc in this simultaneously hilarious and terrifying technophobic horror.

The Man Who Stole The Scream (Original) | TBC

As the eyes of the world turned to the Winter Olympics of 1994 in Lilehammer, Norway, just eighty miles away in Oslo, two men broke into the National Gallery and stole Edvard Munch’s $100m painting, The Scream. In this original documentary, the true story behind the theft of and subsequent cat-and-mouse chase to find one of the most expensive paintings in history is told by the man who took it! Wildly entertaining and almost unbelievable, this one’s not to be missed.

New TV on Sky and NOW in August 2023

Winning Time S2 | 7 August

Season two of basketball drama Winning Time continues to explore the professional and personal lives of the legendary 80s LA Lakers line-up. This time around our focus is drawn to the period just after the 1980 finals, and from there we’re taken all the way to 1984 and the first professional rematch between Larry Bird and Magic Johnson, played here by Sean Patrick Small and Quincy Isaiah. John C. Reilly and Jason Clarke also return for the second season.

Classic Movies: The Story of… | TBC

In six-part series Classic Movies: The Story of…, critics and cinephiles alike come together to give viewers the inside track on six of the most iconic and acclaimed movies ever made. Exploring a wide range of films from Carol Reed’s classic noir The Third Man to James Cameron’s sci-fi blockbuster Terminator 2: Judgement Day, with stops at The Ladykillers, Brighton Rock, The Graduate, and Ran along the way, no self-respecting film buff would want to skip this one.

Miracle Workers: End Times (S4) | TBC

The fourth series of everybody’s favourite madcap Heaven-based workplace comedy, Miracle Workers: End Times will see Daniel Radcliffe’s low-level angel thrust into a Mad Max style apocalyptic wasteland. Geraldine Viswanathan returns here as Radcliffe’s on-screen wife, Freya, whilst Steve Buscemi’s God will be back and getting into bother too. Radioactive mutants, killer robots, and a tyrannous homeowner’s association are all in store for fans this time out.

Never Mind the Buzzcocks S3 | TBC

The Taskmaster himself Mr. Greg Davies is back in the presenting chair for the third series of Sky’s Never Mind The Buzzcocks revival. The latest edition of the music quiz show will see Noel Fielding and Daisy-May Cooper back as team captains, with comic Jamali Maddix filling in the regular guest spot.
