New on Netflix UK in August 2023: Best movies and TV from Heartstopper to One Piece

Buzzy blockbuster action-thriller Heart of Stone, starring Wonder Woman herself Gal Gadot, leads the line-up of new releases heading to Netflix UK this August.

Elsewhere, if you’re more into ectoplasm than espionage then the streamer debut of Jason Reitman’s sci-fi requel Ghostbusters: Afterlife has got you covered. Splitting the difference between action and the supernatural, Netflix original The Monkey King is well worth a look, an animated action-comedy based on an epic 17th century Chinese tale.

Over on the TV side of things, a Netflix original live-action adaptation of the globally successful One Piece anime and manga series awaits. The second season of the streamer’s smash-hit teen LGBT series Heartstopper, a show based on Alice Oseman’s beloved graphic novels, also arrives in August.

Rounding out the month’s telly offerings there’s reality series At Home With The Furys, which follows heavyweight champion Tyson Fury’s life outside of the ring, and the return of The Lincoln Lawyer for the second half of its second series.

New movies coming to Netflix UK in August 2023

Mark Cavendish: Never Enough (Original) | 2 August

Known in cycling circles as the Manx Missile, Mark Cavendish is one of the most celebrated British sportsmen of all-time. Over the last seven years however, we have seen the sprinter crash out of a potentially record-beating Tour De France, plunge headfirst into a spiral of injury, illness, and depression, and mount one of the most spirited comebacks in sporting history.

In this new documentary, which boasts exclusive access to Mark and his wife Peta, as well as many of his team-mates and coaches, a remarkably raw and unflinchingly honest story of an icon’s rise, fall, and rise again is told.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife | 10 August

Following a somewhat divisive response to Paul Feig’s 2016 reboot Ghostbusters: Answer The Call, Jason Reitman — son of OG Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman — goes back to bustin’ basics with family-friendly sci-fi blockbuster Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Carrie Coon stars here as Callie, a single mother who moves into her father’s old house in smalltown Summerville with her kids (Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace), hoping for a fresh start. It isn’t long, however, before the town’s hidden secrets and Callie’s familial connection to the Stay Puft incident of 1984 prompt something strange to start happening in their neighbourhood.

Franchise stalwarts Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson make heroic returns in this clear love letter to the franchise and its fans, whilst the new additions to the cast — including a typically charismatic Paul Rudd - show that perhaps you can teach an old (demon) dog new tricks after all.

Heart of Stone (Original) | 11 August

From Wild Rose and director Tom Harper comes action-packed Netflix original Heart of Stone. Set in a world of shadowy organisations and world-threatening hackers, this espionage action-thriller sees Gal Gadot’s secret agent Rachel Stone tasked with stopping ‘The Heart’ – an advanced AI asset – from falling into the hands of Keya Dhawan (Alia Bhatt), whose nefarious plans threaten global stability.

Aided by MI6 counterpart Parker (Jamie Dornan), the film will see Gadot’s stone parachuting off cliffs, fighting at several thousand feet, and pitting both brains and brawn against the baddest of baddies in the land. Ethan Hunt would be proud!

The Monkey King (Original) | 18 August

Inspired by Wu Cheng’en’s epic Ming dynasty era novel Journey to the West, The Monkey King — from action star and filmmaker Stephen Chow (Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer) — is Netflix’s latest original animated offering. Crazy Rich Asians’ Jimmy O.

Yang stars as Monkey, a magical monkey with superpowers and attitude problems living in the 7th century. Determined to prove himself and become an immortal king, Monkey sets out on a perilous journey to vanquish all the demons in the land. However, a chance meeting with peasant daughter Lin (Jolie Hoang-Rappaport) soon sets Monkey on an altogether more important journey – one to becoming his best self.

You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah (Original) | 25 August

Adam Sandler’s latest Netflix comedy You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah, based on Fiona Rosenbloom’s same-named 2007 young adult novel, is a real family affair. The film, directed by Sammi Cohen, sees The Sandman starring alongside not only Frozen megastar Idina Menzel, but also his daughters Sadie and Sunny as well as his wife Jackie.

In this one, Sunny Sandler is Stacey Friedman, a young girl whose epic bat mitzvah plans begin to go comically awry when boy troubles and middle school drama come between her and her best friend (Samantha Lorraine).

TV shows coming to Netflix UK in August 2023

Heartstopper S2 (Original) | 3 August

Everybody’s favourite queer teen couple Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke) are back in season two of Heartstopper, which hits Netflix at the start of the month.

With the lovestruck lads set to go public with their relationship in the upcoming series after Nick came out to his mum (Olivia Colman) at the tail-end of season one, a school-trip to Paris with will-they-won’t-they pals Elle (Yasmin Finney) and Tao (William Gao) ahead and the prospect of conflict among the boys’ peer groups and family circles to deal with, plenty of drama awaits.

But, if we’ve learnt anything so far from Heartstopper, it’s that you can bet things will work out in the end as this wholesome coming-of-age adaptation continues.

Painkiller (Limited Series) (Original) | 10 August

A fictionalised account of the origins and aftermath of America’s opioid crisis, limited series Painkiller shines a light on the perpetrators, victims, and truth-seekers whose lives were changed forever by the invention of OxyContin.

Based on Barry Meier’s same-named book and ‘The Family That Built an Empire of Pain’, a New Yorker article by Patrick Radden Keefe, the series – which stars Matthew Broderick, Uzo Aduba, and Taylor Kitsch – is an eye-opening examination of criminality, addiction, and America’s medical-industrial complex.

At Home With The Furys (Original) | 16 August

With the Gypsy King Tyson Fury retiring from boxing, Netflix’s newest reality series invites viewers to step inside the former world heavyweight champion’s Morecambe mansion home, where he lives with his wife and six kids.

Exploring Fury’s other roles as a father, a husband, and a mental health advocate, whilst also offering a fly-on-the-wall experience of a life filled with A-List pals, world tours, and lavish family holidays, this feels like an instant binge win. And yes, Molly-Mae and Tommy Fury do show up.

The Chosen One (Original) | 16 August

Netflix’s latest foray into the Millarverse, the comic book world of creator Mark Millar, is fantasy series The Chosen One. Based on Millar’s American Jesus comics run, the eponymous chosen one here is Bobby Luhnow, who plays Jodie, a twelve-year-old Californian boy who discovers he has Godly powers - Son of God-ly in fact.

Whilst turning water into wine and raising the dead may be all well and good, and certainly is of interest to his town’s Evangelical and Yaquí leaders, Jodie is more interested in plucking up the courage to tell a girl he likes her than battling the literal antichrist. You can’t always get what you want, though, can you?

One Piece (Original) | 31 August

Based on the highest-selling manga series in history and its equally beloved, 1000+ episode ongoing anime adaptation, Netflix’s live-action One Piece series is a high risk but potentially even higher reward proposition.

For those who don’t know, the series follows the seafaring exploits of young pirate captain Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) and his crew as they set out to make Luffy Pirate King and retrieve the mythic treasure, One Piece.

Along the way, the gang must evade capture by the Marines as they search the high seas and tangle with dangerous rivals at every turn.
