Netflix and 'Black Panther' make Oscars history with Best Picture nominations
Ten years ago, the idea that a streaming platform would end up producing Oscar-worthy films was ridiculous.
Same for superhero movies earning a Best Picture nomination, but now both those things have come true.
Black Panther is the first ever superhero movie to earn a place in the Best Picture category a year after James Mangold’s Logan earned a Best Adapted Screenplay nod.
The Chadwick Boseman-led film earned Disney a further four nominations in the Best Original Music Score, Best Original Song, Best Costume Design and Best Production Design categories though its tally is nothing on Netflix’s.
The streaming giant not only got a Best Picture nomination for Roma, but the Mexican film also picked up a Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Original Screenplay nod for Alfonso Cuaron, as well as Best Actress for Yalitza Aparicio, Best Supporting Actress for Marina De Tavira, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Production Design.
Aparicio, a first-time actress, and nominee said her journey has been “extraordinary”.
“As a daughter of a domestic worker and an indigenous woman myself, I am proud this movie will help those of us who feel invisible be seen,” she said in a statement. “I am eternally grateful to the Academy for recognizing ROMA and am honored to be part of Alfonso’s vision.
“Congratulations to Alfonso, the entire cast and crew, and my dear friend Marina De Tavira. I am so humbled and honored. Thank You.”
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, another Netflix film, picked up several nominations too including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Costume Design, and Best Original Song.
Didn’t need the most popular category after all.
