'Mighty Ducks' to skate again in Disney+ reboot series

Ice hockey comedy franchise The Mighty Ducks is set to be revitalised for streaming platform Disney+.

The 90s trilogy focused on the titular hockey team and the attorney who is tasked with coaching them as part of his community service for drunk driving.

Discussing Film is now reporting that the concept will be reignited for a new TV series, which will be broadcast on the Disney+ platform.

Production is set to begin in February, with the Canadian city of Vancouver the main location.

The prospect of a Mighty Ducks reboot was first raised in January 2018, with The Hollywood Reporter writing that the Disney-owned ABC Signature Studios was working on a TV series.

At that time, the notion was mooted that the series might eventually end up on Disney’s then-unnamed streaming service.

Original series writer Steven Brill and producer Jordan Kerner were reported to be on board.

There is no word on whether Estevez will play a part in the new series.

The Mighty Ducks was a box office success in 1992, earning $51m (£40m) from a budget of just $10m (£7.8m), spawning two live-action sequels and an animated series featuring talking ducks.

A year after the film’s release, Disney founded the Anaheim Ducks NHL team, which has made the playoffs 14 times and won the Stanley Cup in 2007.

Real world hockey stars have often made cameo appearances in the series, including Wayne Gretzky, Mike Modano and Chris Chelios.

Disney+ is set to launch in the USA and Canada on 12 November, with a UK debut for the service set for March 2020.

High-profile content including Star Wars spin-off series The Mandalorian and a live-action remake of Disney animated classic The Lady and the Tramp will be a part of the streamer’s initial offering.
