Yahoo Movies Meryl Streep slams Donald Trump in another epic speech
Meryl Streep has been on the Trump war path again, this time at the Human Rights Campaign gala.
It was only last month when the multi Oscar-winner made a powerful speech against the new President when she took to the stage at the Golden Globes – much to Trump’s disapproval as his retaliatory Tweet showed.
Now she’s back for seconds.
During the New York dinner event, Streep voiced her strong opinions on the newly appointed POTUS.
According to Entertainment Weekly, she had the following to say;
“‘Evil prospers when good men do nothing’… ain’t that the truth,” she began.
“We shouldn’t be surprised that fundamentalists, of all stripes, everywhere, are exercised and fuming. We shouldn’t be surprised that these profound changes come at a much steeper cost than it seems would lie true in the 20th century. We shouldn’t be surprised if not everyone is totally down with it.”
No doubt Trump will be angry at her comments, just like he was the other week. But the actress wasn’t finished nor did she appear the slightest bit deterred.
“But if we live through this precarious moment… if his catastrophic instinct to retaliate doesn’t lead us to nuclear winter, we will have much to thank this President for because he will have woken us up to how fragile freedom really is.
The whip of the Executive can, through a Twitter feed, lash and intimidate, punish and humiliate, delegitimise the press and imagined enemies with spasmodic regularity and easily provoked predictability.”
Her comments, as per her Golden Globes speech, didn’t mention Trump by name but were strongly indicative over who she was talking about. Here, it’s just as glaringly obvious but doesn’t directly name him.
And in regards to the Tweet the President sent, claiming Streep as “overrated”, she had no problem making a joke about it: “Yes, I am the most overrated, over-decorated, and currently, over-berated actress of my generation. But that is why you invited me here! Right?”

Streep was attending the gala to accept the Ally for Equality Award for her efforts to give a voice to the LGBTQ community.
It’s unlikely that this will be the last we hear of their feud, especially with the impending Oscars ceremony where the actress is nominated for her leading role in ‘Florence Foster Jenkins’. It’s her 20th Oscar nom, for which she’s won three times, for ‘Kamer v Kramer’, ‘Sophie’s Choice’, and ‘The Iron Lady’.
