The Platform 2 is the newest instalment of Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia franchise, and it has already drawn quite a lot of buzz on Netflix around the shocking events in the narrative.

Set in a dystopian world where residents in a tower prison known as Vertical Self-Management Center must fight to survive, the sequel follows newcomer Perempuan (Milena Smit). Since the events of the first film life in the nightmarish tower block has changed from a dog-eat-dog world to a dictatorship fuelled by strict rules.

In the prison those on the uppermost floors are fed first, with food sent further down the tower as time goes on. Unlike the first film where it was a free for all, the sequel sees the prisoners adhere to a rule that they will only eat the meal they requested — and if they don't they'll be punished, severely.

Before we delve any deeper into what happens in the movie and what its shocking ending could mean, be warned that this article contains spoilers.

In the film, Perempuan decides to make a plan of escape from the tower prison and she hatches a plot to get out by protecting herself when the guards gas the prisoners to get rid of them. She swallows a piece of a painting as a shield to the fumes and wakes up attached to a mass of bodies that is being suspended in the air through anti-gravity.

The bodies are being taken to the lowest most point of the tower, but Perempuan is able to break free before the mass is discarded and hides from the guards. As she does so she sees them place a child into one of the beds on the lowest floor, adamant that she wants to redeem herself, Perempuan decides to save the sleeping boy by pulling him up through the anti-gravity forcefield.

As she does so Perempuan strikes her head multiple times, and blood can be seen gushing from her head. It is then that the film dives into a fantastical sequence, where Perempuan and the boy descend further down the tower and she is met by various characters who have died over both films.

Perempuan is told that "only they can ascend" referring to children, she is told that her "journey is over, but he will have another chance". The implication here is that Perempuan died, but the boy she saved was able to live through her saving him. The character is ultimately taken away by the others.

Further sequences in the credits see other characters appear, including Zorion Eguileor's Trimagasi who appeared in the first film as Goreng's (Ivan Massagué) first cell mate. The pair speak to each other before Goreng looks to Perempuan and they hug.

The Platform 2 is available to watch on Netflix.
