What happened to Casey White from Netflix’s Jailbreak: Love on the Run?

Jailbreak: Love on the Run is Netflix's latest true crime hit, with the documentary exploring the events that led up to prisoner Casey White's escape from Lauderdale County Jail in April 2022.

White was sentenced to a 75-year prison sentence for attempted murder and robbery in 2015, he also confessed to the 2015 murder of a woman named Connie Ridgeway but later pled not guilty by reason of insanity. The movie examines how the murder suspect and prison guard Vicky White struck up a romance during his incarceration, leading to them fleeing the Alabama jail together.

What happened to Casey White and where is he now?

White was transferred to the Lauderdale County Detention Center in August 2020 to await trial after confessing to Ridgeway's murder, the crime was separate to his conviction for attempted murder and armed robbery. It was there that he met Vicky White, who was assistant director of operations and about to retire.

The documentary's executive producer Rachel Stockman told Netflix's Tudum how the prisoner "was described as a 'romancer' by one of his former cellmates, and those who worked at the jail said he was a polite, even charming, prisoner."

"Vicky, who was used to doing things for others, fell for Casey’s manipulation, especially when he claimed he was being framed for a murder he didn’t commit. He made her believe in him," Stockman added.

In April 2022, after her retirement party, Vicky told her co-workers that she was taking White to a courthouse to receive a mental health evaluation but when they didn't return people began to wonder what happened. The pair, it turned out, went on the run together and eluded authorities for eleven days.

Police found Vicky's car abandoned with a handcuff key and White's prison-issue shoes still inside, which led to them investigating the prison guard further and find that she had cleared her bank account and had a secret phone which had been in contact with White. Authorities began searching for the pair and were tipped off of their location after the fugitives were seen at a car wash, and police subsequently chased them down and ran them into a ditch.

After the car chase the prison guard was discovered with a serious head wound and taken to hospital where she died, it was later confirmed by the coroner's office that she had died by suicide.

White was arrested and sent back to prison, he was given a life sentence for the escape and still remains in custody. He was originally set to be charged for felony murder but made a deal in which he pled guilty to first-degree escape in exchange for not being prosecuted for Vicky's death per CNN.

In February 2024 the case against White for the death of Connie Ridgeway was dropped, according to reports from Fox News.
