Margot Robbie promises her 'Barbie' movie will surprise viewers
Margot Robbie has promised that her upcoming Barbie movie, which she is producing and starring in, will surprise viewers.
The actress insisted as much during a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the release of Promising Young Woman, another film that Robbie and her LuckyChap Entertainment production company oversaw.
Robbie revealed that the company’s motto is, “If it’s not a ‘f***, yes,’ it’s a, ’no’.” When asked to define what this actually means, she said that one of the first movies they produced, I, Tonya, was the perfect example.

“A lot of people probably read that script and went, ‘That can't be made.’ We were young and dumb enough to go, ‘Let's make that.’”
Robbie said she had the same gut feeling after meeting with Promising Young Woman’s writer and director Emerald Fennell, and then wondering, “Oh, God, can we pull it off?”

LuckyChap’s approach has slightly changed over recent years though, as rather than wanting “to be subversive”, the company now aims to make content that’s surprising.
Regarding the upcoming Barbie, Robbie said the company wants to make “things that feel a little left of centre”.
“Something like Barbie where the IP [intellectual property], the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, ‘Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is.’
“But our goal is to be like, ‘Whatever you're thinking, we're going to give you something totally different – the thing you didn't know you wanted.’”

Robbie said that’s why Oscar nominees Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach were brought in to write the film, with Gerwig reportedly directing, too.
Ultimately, Robbie said she wanted Barbie to “truly honour the IP and the fan base and also surprise people,” while sparking “a thoughtful conversation”.
