Lord and Miller developing live-action Marvel shows for Sony

We’ve known since April that Into The Spider-Verse creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller were developing a Marvel TV universe for Sony. But a new interview with Deadline has revealed a startling new detail - the shows are going to be live-action.

“We are developing a handful of live-action shows using Sony’s Marvel characters, of which there are like 900 characters. We’re figuring out a way to develop the shows so that each are their own unique experience but are also related.”

Now, we also know that the pair are developing an Into The Spider-Verse series, which we all assumed would be animated, just like the movie.

But with Sony so far focusing solely on the Spider-Man elements of those 900 characters, and with Lord and Miller saying instalments of this new universe will be ‘their own unique experience but are also related,’ that totally sounds like we’re getting a series of Spider-Verse spin-offs.

In addition to a Miles Morales show, could we be seeing a Spider-Gwen series starring Hailee Steinfeld? A Spider-Man Noir stand-alone fronted by Nic Cage? A Who Framed Roger Rabbit style series centred around Spider-Ham? All of the above?!

“We are so grateful to everyone at Sony Pictures Television for choosing to partner with us and expand our enduring relationship with the studio,” the pair said in a statement when the deal was first announced.

“Together we aim to make groundbreaking work of the highest quality and integrity, and to place that work in convenient proximity to your eyeballs and earholes, wherever you may be.”

That original quote brings up a good point. Where will be able to see these live-action shows? Disney+? They have their own live-action Marvel series to focus on. Hulu? That’s the rumoured home for X-Men horror movie New Mutants - perhaps Sony’s MCU-adjacent series could end up there. Or could Sony be considering a new streaming platform to replace Crackle?

Still, wherever it lands, our Spider-sense definitely isn’t tingling about this one.
