Logan lays waste to the world box office, with £200 million opening
Hugh Jackman’s final outing as Wolverine has brought in the crowds, with ‘Logan’ delivering a sturdy $237.8 million (that’s just shy of £200 million) at the box office.
It raked in a 36% share of the cinema-going audience in the US over its opening weekend, making just over $85 million (£69 million) in three days.
That’s added to $152.5 million (£124 million) worldwide so far, and could mean that with its production budget of $97 million – plus probably the same amount again for advertising and marketing – it is already likely in profit.
Clearly the r-rated take on Jackman’s troubled hero has proved a draw, this latest iteration from director James Mangold being the most brooding and brutal yet.
The movie has also been hailed by critics – riding high with 93% approval rating on reviews aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
The Independent‘s Geoffrey Macnab called it ‘a Marvel movie with a bit of soul and some true grit. Presumed to be the final outing for Wolverine, it plays more like a late period John Wayne western than it does like a conventional superhero film’.
Mangold has even said that he’s mulling converting the movie into black and white, telling one fan last week…
‘Logan’ is out now across the UK.
