Jesse Eisenberg suggests he won't be playing Lex Luthor in future DCEU movies

Jesse Eisenberg has hinted that his villainous Lex Luthor from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is unlikely to return to the big screen.

The 36-year-old actor played the antagonist driving a wedge between the two titular heroes in Zack Snyder’s 2016 blockbuster and briefly reappeared in the post-credits scene of 2017 team-up Justice League, where he teased the formation of a team of villains to oppose the heroes.

Now, in an interview to promote horror-comedy sequel Zombieland: Double Tap, Eisenberg has poured cold water on fans’ hopes that he will return to Luthor again in a future DC Extended Universe outing.

Eisenberg was interviewed alongside Zombieland co-star Woody Harrelson, who portrayed Carnage in the post-credits sequence of 2018 superhero outing Venom, when they were each asked by ComicBookMovie.com to discuss the futures of their respective super-baddies.

Harrelson was preparing to discuss his likely return in the Andy Serkis-directed sequel when he was interrupted by Eisenberg, who said he expected their respective returns to be in “different venues”.

He added: “His will be, like, kind of a movie that people go to and mine will be in my living room that people occasionally go to, but it’s mostly one at a time.”

DC appears to be in the midst of a soft reboot of the franchise, with The Suicide Squad seemingly set to ignore the events of the previous movie, while the upcoming Birds of Prey will carve a new path for Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn.

Meanwhile, ostensibly standalone films like Shazam! and Joker have received more positive reviews than the previous movies, which clawed tightly to the shared universe model deployed over at rival comic book house Marvel.

Batman v Superman did, however, make $873m (£677) at the worldwide box office, emerging as a solid financial success.

Batman is set to return, now played by Twilight star Robert Pattinson, in the upcoming The Batman, directed by Matt Reeves.

That film recently added Zoe Kravitz to its cast as Catwoman, while negotiations reportedly broke down over a potential role for Jonah Hill as either The Riddler or The Penguin.

Zombieland: Double Tap is in UK cinemas from 18 October.
