James McAvoy donates £50k towards teen’s cancer treatment

If anyone can help, it’s Professor X.

‘X-Men’ star James McAvoy has made a generous £50,000 donation towards life-saving treatment for 16-year-old cancer patient, Kelly Turner. The British actor dug deep after he met Kelly during a visit to a London hospital earlier this week.

And it’s brought her one step closer to the treatment she needs.

Kelly Turner was diagnosed in 2015 with a rare form of cancer – Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor. But after numerous courses of chemotherapy, she needs life0changing surgery in order to beat it completely.

“She’s been well cared for by The Royal Marsden, Sutton UK with 9 rounds of chemotherapy which has responded well,” says her Just Giving page, “But because there are tumours close to her Liver they’re not prepared to carry out any Surgery.”

“We have sought a fifth opinion from Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York and they have agreed to do the surgery, immunotherapy and radiotherapy. As for the cost, update as of 3rd August an ‘estimate’ of $1,200,000 is needed by MSKCC. We are not covered by the American insurance system so we’ll have to find funding.”

To date, her friends and family have raised a whopping £463,350.

But while that’s enough to cover the initial surgery, the $1 million target is needed to cover follow-up immunotherapy and radiotherapy. And James McAvoy’s donation will go at least some way towards covering this.

Gift Aid added another £12,5000 to the donation.

Kelly’s dad, martin was reportedly impressed with McAvoy’s ‘kind approach’ when he visited her daughter, stating that: “He decided to come and visit everyone and spent a lot of time talking to Kelly and the others. She managed to grab a selfie with him, so that’s another celebrity she’s met.”
