Hutchence biopic planned

A biopic of INXS frontman Michael Hutchence is to go into production.

Given the working title 'Two Worlds Colliding', from the lyrics to the band's hit 'Never Tear Us Apart', it's to be made by filmmaker Robert Galinsky, who has also written the screenplay.

It will be based on 'Just A Man: The Real Michael Hutchence', the biography written by Hutchence's sister Tina and his mother Patricia.

“I chased the idea 12 years ago but there was so much litigation and family issues, it looked too harsh,” Galinsky told Australian magazine Encore.

“But recently I was made aware of Trevor Ray Field - who was good friends of Tina Hutchence - and he brought me the book.

“Over the course of the last month we negotiated the rights with Tina, and we hit the mark. I like music biopics to be about the person, not just sex, drugs and rock'n'roll.

“It's going to be a heartfelt, interesting project about a complex life, like 'Ray' or 'Walk the Line'.”

But it's not the only planned biopic, with another called 'Michael' to be made by Richard Lowenstein, who directed the INXS videos for 'Need You Tonight' and 'Never Tear Us Apart', as well as the 1986 films 'Dogs In Space' which also starred Hutchence.

“I’m aware of Richard’s project – there are a few around,” said Galinsky. “This will be from the source material with a family perspective however. Richard is a good director, but I think this will appeal to a mainstream audience.”

The 37-year-old singer was found dead in a hotel room in Sydney 15 years ago today (November 22).
