Here’s our first look at Alicia Vikander in Tomb Raider
It’s official – ‘Tomb Raider’ looks awesome.
Starring Alicia Vikander as iconic video game character, Lara Croft, the upcoming ‘Tomb Raider’ reboot has just released its first official images over at Vanity Fair. And it looks as though we’ve finally got our first glimpse at Alicia Vikander in the iconic role.
Yep – she looks amazing.

Clearly, ‘Tomb Raider’ is channelling the aesthetics of the recent 2013 video game, with a younger Lara croft appearing in far more survivalistic gear than her earlier counterpart. And I have to admit – it makes Lara look even more badass than ever.
“When I was asked to take on this role I got really excited – Lara Croft is a truly iconic character,“ she told Vanity Fair. “I think people can identify with her for lots of different reasons, but for me I very much see her as a model for many young women.”
“She’s trying to carve out her place in the world and connect her future with her past. She also has a fantastic mix of traits – tough, smart, vulnerable, plus she’s kick ass! She is also uniquely different to other characters I have taken on previously. It’s a lot of fun trying to get into Lara’s head and the challenge of getting to grips with such a physical role is an element of this project that I find an absolute thrill.”
Of course, Vikander is no stranger to strong female roles.
She previously starred as the manipulative (and truly fascinating) Ava in the Oscar-winning sci-fi flick, ‘Ex Machina’ as well as starring alongside Eddie Redmayne in ‘The Danish Girl’.
But will she make a good Lara Croft?
All signs point to yes – she certainly looks the part clutching that makeshift spear, and if anyone can bring a touch of class to the Tomb Raider franchise, it’s Alicia Vikander. Let’s just hope the script stands up to the same standards as the video game it’s based on.
If it does, we could be getting something very special.
Alicia Vikander stars as Lara Croft, alongside Dominic West, Walton Goggins, Alexandre Willaume, and Daniel Wu.
Here’s the official synopsis: Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen. Now a young woman of 21 without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent, and takes college courses, rarely making it to class. Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father’s global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he’s truly gone.
Advised to face the facts and move forward after seven years without him, even Lara can’t understand what drives her to finally solve the puzzle of his mysterious death.Going explicitly against his final wishes, she leaves everything she knows behind in search of her dad’s last-known destination: a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan. But her mission will not be an easy one; just reaching the island will be extremely treacherous. Suddenly, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Lara, who—against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit—must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown. If she survives this perilous adventure, it could be the making of her, earning her the name tomb raider.
Roar Uthang directed the film based on a script by Geneva Robertson-Dworet.
‘Tomb Raider’ heads to cinemas on 16 March 2018.
