Golden Globes host Jo Koy labelled 'awful' and 'lowlight of the night'

Jo Koy has been the subject of widespread criticism from Golden Globes viewers following his appearance as the host for the awards show, which was received poorly by audience members both in the room and watching from home.

The comedian took shots at Taylor Swift, Barbie, and even writers who helped him with his monologue during his appearance on the show, something which the A-list stars visibly didn't react well to. Koy's presenting was called "painful" by The Independent, whilst Buzzfeed joking that the monologue was a tribute to Oppenheimer because it was "a bomb".

At one point in his monologue, Koy remarked how he had only taken the role 10 days earlier and so he hadn't written the whole speech but the jokes he had written were ones that the crow were laughing to. His hosting of the awards show led viewers at home to label him "awful" and a "lowlight of the night", with some even calling for Koy to never be invited back. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, several viewers shared their thoughts on the comedian.

One person shared a side-by-side comparison of reactions from the stars in the room, from Emma Stone to Helen Mirren, all of whom didn't react to the comedian's jokes. The viewer wrote: "Never invite Jo Koy to one of these again please. So, so awful."

Hitting out at the comedian for his jokes about Swift and Barbie, one person criticised Koy as "sexist" as they wrote: "So far Jo Koy has insulted Taylor Swift, the woman responsible for the highest-grossing music tour EVER, and the women responsible for the highest grossing film in Warner Bros history — Barbie. This year, of all the years. Reductive, sexist, and cheap. Hate it"

Along similar lines, one viewer shared: "i have never in my life heard of a jo koy, but suddenly i am ready to campaign for him to never work in hollywood again. i'm so sick of the misogyny in 2024 when 2023 was literally the year of Barbie + Taylor Swift, the year it felt like womanhood was finally being celebrated..."

Another viewer said: "The biggest lowlight of the night has to be Jo Koy, coming fresh off the monumental WGA strike, disgracefully throwing his writers under the bus"

Sharing a clip of Swift and Selena Gomez chatting in a break from the awards show, one person joked: "taylor and selena gossiping and their reactions to each other’s gossip is funnier than anything jo koy has said btw"

Another person shared a clip of booing from RuPaul's Drag Race, and wrote: "Never ever ever ever hire Jo Koy to host anything EVER"

One person shared a clip of Steven Yeun's speech after winning for Beef in which he referenced the Disney film Frozen, and said: "Steven Yeun's 'Frozen' reference in his acceptance speech was funnier than Jo Koy's entire opening monologue"

It wasn't just viewers at home who seemed frustrated by Koy's jokes, as Emma Stone appeared to make a dig at the presenter by calling him "an a*****e" in reference to the comments he made about Swift as she discussed having the singer's support at the show, per a video from the Hollywood Reporter.

The Golden Globes saw shows like Succession, Beef and The Bear win big in the TV categories, whilst Oppenheimer swept the board in the movies category, and others winners included Lily Gladstone, Emma Stone and Paul Giamatti.
