Disney release first photo of Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins
Here’s a teaser image that’s practically perfect in every way.
Production is currently underway on ‘Mary Poppins Returns,’ a belated sequel to the 1964 classic, and now Disney have released the first image of new leading lady Emily Blunt, taking over from Julie Andrews in the title role.
It doesn’t reveal too much, but it certainly suggests something in a similar spirit to the iconic Oscar-winning musical.
In addition to this image, Disney have also released an official synopsis for the film from director Rob Marshall (‘Chicago,’ ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’), which you can read below:
“‘Mary Poppins Returns’ is set in 1930s depression-era London (the time period of the original novels) and is drawn from the wealth of material in PL Travers’ additional seven books. In the story, Michael (Ben Whishaw) and Jane (Emily Mortimer) are now grown up, with Michael, his three children and their housekeeper, Ellen (Julie Walters), living on Cherry Tree Lane.
“After Michael suffers a personal loss, the enigmatic nanny Mary Poppins (Blunt) re-enters the lives of the Banks family, and, along with the optimistic street lamplighter Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda), uses her unique magical skills to help the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives. Mary Poppins also introduces the children to a new assortment of colorful and whimsical characters, including her eccentric cousin, Topsy (Meryl Streep).”
As well as reintroducing audiences to the world of PL Travers’ beloved character, ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ also reunites a number of former co-stars; Blunt and Streep previously worked together on ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ and ‘Into the Woods,’ which was also directed by Rob Marshall. Also, Whishaw and Walters acted together in ‘Paddington’ – in which Walters also played a housekeeper, funnily enough.
Other big names set to appear in ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ include Colin Firth, Angela Lansbury, and the original film’s star Dick Van Dyke.
It’s scheduled to open on Christmas Day 2018.
