Daisy Ridley reveals shocking ‘Star Wars’ alternate plot line about Rey's family history
On Tuesday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, actress Daisy Ridley shocked fans with new information about her Star Wars character Rey Skywalker’s family lineage. In Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker it is revealed that Rey is Emperor Palpatine’s granddaughter but Ridley said that wasn’t always the case.
“At the beginning they were toying with an Obi-Wan connection,” said Ridley. “There were different versions, and then it really went to that she was no one.”
In fact, Daisy wasn’t sure whose family Rey belonged to until the end of production. “Even while we were filming I wasn't sure what the answer was going to be,” she said. “It kept changing.”

The new information received mixed reactions from fans and caused “Rey Kenobi” to become a trending topic on Twitter.
I know some of y’all really wanted Rey Kenobi, but Rey Nobody will always own my heart. She didn’t need anyone’s legacy, she deserved to have her own. pic.twitter.com/z0epNbOdN1

thinking about how rey kenobi and ben solo could have defeated palpatine together as a reversal of how palpatine turned their grandfathers against one another pic.twitter.com/QgagyqWcvM

Imaging that Rey was almost a Kenobi actually kills me. It would’ve been much more meaningful if we had Rey Kenobi. It would’ve come full circle. A Kenobi saving a Skywalker from the dark, which is what previously couldn’t be done. Could you... just imagine the potential?

While many fans used social media to theorise how the plot would have been different based on this new information, fill-in host Josh Gad went right to the source. He asked Ridley if his Frozen character Olaf was ever considered to be part of Rey’s family tree.
“I think Olaf was,” said Ridley. “Just a galaxy far, far away. He was in a different time. It was a darker time.”
