Akira live-action remake eyes Jordan Peele to direct
Akira has its sights on a director…
According to The Tracking Board, it looks as though Jordan Peele is being eyed to direct the upcoming live-action ‘Akira’ remake.
“On last week’s Meet the Movie Press, I passed along a rumor that Daniel Espinosa and David F. Sandberg were in the running to direct the live-action AKIRA movie for Warner Bros,” said Editor Jeff Sneider. “But here on the ground at CinemaCon that discussion has shifted, with insiders saying the studio is moving aggressively to lock in Jordan Peele.”

But should he take on the struggling animé project?
It’s no secret that ‘Akira’ has been in the works for years. But every time it looks as though the project is getting close to an official announcement, the tides change and director drop out and everyone generally tends to walk away and wash their hands of it all.
Not exactly a good start.
And I can’t help thinking it would be a duff move for Jordan Peele – especially after the phenomenal success of ‘Get Out’. Of course, he’s already planning to work on several other socially significant horror movies in the coming years… so perhaps he’ll rule himself out.
“I have four other social thrillers that I want to unveil in the next decade,” he told Business Insider. “The best and scariest monsters in the world are human beings and what we are capable of especially when we get together. I’ve been working on these premises about these different social demons, these innately human monsters that are woven into the fabric of how we think and how we interact, and each one of my movies is going to be about a different one of these social demons.”
Not exactly the same as two anime guys screaming for several hours.
Don’t get me wrong – ‘Akira’ could be a good movie. But at this stage, it’s just wrought with problems from the get go. And Jordan Peele would better spend his time devoting his efforts to bringing us more of that culturally significant horror that made ‘Get Out’ such a success.
Will he end up directing ‘Akira’?
For now, we have to wait and see. But I really hope not.
