2016 to break box office record thanks to Disney
2016 has been another huge year for Hollywood. So much that it is broken the box office year record set just 12 months ago.
It has now been projected by comScore, via The Hollywood Reporter, that the box office revenue in 2016 will eventually finish at $11.3 billion, surpassing the $11.14 billion of 2015.
On Monday the continuing success of ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ and ‘Sing’ meant that 2016 passed $11.05 billion at the box office, which was 2.3 percent more than this time last year.
Hollywood studios have Disney to thank for such stellar numbers, with the top four films all coming from the studio. ‘Captain America Civil War’ ($1.153.3 billion), ‘Finding Dory’ ($1.027.8 billion), and ‘Zootopia’ ($1.023.8 billion) were the only three films to cross over the billion threshold with ‘The Jungle Book’ lagging behind on $966.6 billion.
We can expect ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars’ to challenge ‘Civil War’ for the top spot, though, especially as it passed the $600 million mark earlier this week. But since Lucasfilm, like Marvel Studios, is a subsidiary of the studio, Disney probably won’t be too concerned.
2017 is set to be a bumper year for Disney, too, because ‘Star Wars: Episode 8’, ‘Beauty & The Beast’, ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2’, and ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ are all expected to fare rather well.
