How Carrie Fisher wanted her obituary to read
Film fans everywhere are still reeling from the loss of screen legend Carrie Fisher, who passed away on 27 December following a cardiac arrest four days earlier.
But while the late actress and writer will always be primarily remembered as Princess Leia in the ‘Star Wars’ series, it’s well worth remembering that she was also one of the sharpest wits in Hollywood.
For evidence of Fisher’s biting sense of humour, we need look no further than how she once requested her obituary to read.
In ‘Wishful Drinking,’ Fisher’s 2008 memoir based on her one-woman stage show of the same name, she recounted one of the first pieces of direction she received from George Lucas on the set of 1977’s original ‘Star Wars.’
“George comes up to me the first day of filming and he takes one look at the dress and says, ‘You can’t wear a bra under that dress.’
“So, I say, ‘Okay, I’ll bite. Why?’ And he says, ‘Because. . . there’s no underwear in space.’
“What happens is you go to space and you become weightless. So far so good, right? But then your body expands??? But your bra doesn’t—so you get strangled by your own bra.
“Now I think that this would make for a fantastic obit—so I tell my younger friends that no matter how I go, I want it reported that I drowned in moonlight, strangled by my own bra.”
There you have it. The late, great Carrie Fisher, who drowned in moonlight strangled by her own bra, aged 60.
