Yes, Brian Callahan's Tennessee Titans starters will have to play in NFL preseason games

One of the first major changes for the Tennessee Titans in the Brian Callahan era will be evident from the earliest moments of his first preseason game in charge.

Callahan indicated that he expects the Titans' starters to play at least a little bit in all three preseason games, beginning with an Aug. 10 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers. This is a notable change from the Mike Vrabel era, where many of the Titans' best and most established players routinely played in one or zero preseason games.

"Our team needs to play together," Callahan told the media Tuesday, a day before players take the field for the start of training camp. "They need to play football together. We need to operate on offense. We need to operate on defense. We’ve got a lot of new faces and new people here. That’s an important part of the preseason for me, so our starters will play."

Callahan said the exact number of snaps and drives each player will have has yet to be worked out, but it will fluctuate on a game-by-game basis. Take the Aug. 17 game against the Seattle Seahawks, for example. Because the Titans will be hosting the Seahawks for a pair of joint practices prior to the matchup, Callahan anticipates his starters will have a lighter workload in that game because so many reps will be taken during the week.

This preseason will be Callahan's first as a head coach, as well as the first for offensive and defensive coordinators Nick Holz and Dennard Wilson, respectively. They inherit a new-look roster that could feature as many as 15 new primary starters who all need to jell.

"I do see our starters will probably play in all three games," Callahan said. "We’ll see what that looks like length-wise, but we need to play together and operate together and play some football before we get started."
