Yahoo analyst on Grizzlies drafting Zach Edey: 'One of the worst picks in draft history'

The Memphis Grizzlies may have been thrilled with their selection of Zach Edey on Wednesday night during the NBA draft, but that sentiment was not shared everywhere.

Yahoo Sports draft analyst Krysten Peek called Memphis choosing Edey with the ninth overall pick "one of the worst picks" she has seen in the history of the draft. Every NBA team that selected a player in the first round received at least a B grade from Peek, except the Grizzlies. She gave Memphis a D for its selection.

Peek believes Edey is a throwback center that doesn't quite fit into the modern game.

"This is shocking, considering the way the NBA is turning in terms of value and upside as a hybrid center," Peek said. ". . . I absolutely have no idea how he's going to fit in the backcourt with Ja Morant. He only connected on 8% of his shots off pick and rolls, and defensively, he's a liability in the pick and roll with his limited footwork. Teams are going to hunt him in the pick and roll."

There have been examples of players viewed as throwback style centers not meshing in today's game. Former Duke standout Jahlil Okafor is one notable example. He was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2015 draft before playing just 247 NBA games over a six-year period due to his inability to adjust to the spacing on both ends.

Grizzlies general manager Zach Kleiman met with the media on Wednesday night after the draft and hinted into how Memphis would plan to cover Edey's weaknesses and maximizing his strengths. The Grizzlies believe playing Edey with Ja Morant will make the game easy for him offensively, while having Jaren Jackson Jr. operate as a roam defender on defense will allow Edey to thrive as a drop defender and stay close to the basket.

At 7-foot-4 and 300 pounds, Edey isn't the traditional top-10 draft prospect in today's NBA. And that doesn't even consider that he was a four-year collegiate player in a time where many NBA teams are preferring younger prospects.

However, the Grizzlies have a roster that is ready to compete around Edey. Memphis is an ideal situation for a prospect of Edey's makeup.

Now, we'll see if Peek's assessment stands over time. Edey didn't have to prove a lot of doubters wrong during his collegiate days, but he has to now.

"If I'm wrong, I'm happy to take the L, but this is one of the worst picks I've seen in draft history," Peek said.
