Why South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer hired new director of player personnel/recruiting

COLUMBIA — South Carolina football has hired Darren Uscher as the new director of player personnel and recruiting for the Gamecocks, the school announced via email late Monday.

The news comes after Taylor Edwards quietly exited the program, which was reported by The Big Spur on July 2. In 2023, South Carolina had the No. 16 ranked recruiting class and since Edwards' arrival in 2021, the Gamecocks have consistently made the top 25 under coach Shane Beamer.

South Carolina didn't address Edwards' employment in the email but confirmed Tuesday to The Greenville News that he is no longer on staff

Darren Uscher's college football experience

Uscher, a 2009 graduate of South Carolina, returns to Columbia after serving in a personnel and recruiting role at Oregon. He went to the the Pac-12 Championship Game with the Ducks in 2023, and helped create a 2024 recruiting class that's ranked No. 3 nationally.

In January, Uscher was hired by UCLA as the executive director of recruiting. After coach Chip Kelly left UCLA after the season to join the staff at Ohio State, Uscher returned to Oregon.

Uscher spent two years in the SEC at Auburn from 2021-22 as director of football recruiting where he oversaw recruiting, player personnel and roster management.

He spent seven seasons at Boise State, serving as the football operations/recruiting coordinator for two years before being promoted to director of football recruiting and player personnel. During his time at Boise State from 2014-20, the program had the best recruiting class in the Mountain West Conference every year he was on staff.
