Where does 'Undaunted' come from as Milwaukee Brewers head into playoffs?

You've seen the word all over Milwaukee on billboards and banners, proclaiming the 2024 Brewers to be "undaunted."

Where did the one-word catchphrase come from?

You won't be shocked to discover that it's a concept introduced by first-year manager Pat Murphy, whose personality and fingerprints are all over this team.

"I just think it’s a great word to describe how to react to things when you’re disappointed or don’t get what you want," Murphy said in early July after distributing T-shirts with the word on it to everyone on the team. "Remain undaunted."

The placard that had accompanied the shirt read, "Not intimidated or discouraged by difficulty, danger or disappointment."

"It's a dictionary thing, I think," Murphy cracked.

The real genesis of it is an old newspaper clipping Murphy has hanging up from one of his father's football games. In the article, Ty Murphy is said to be "undaunted" as he eludes pressure from the defense. Murphy said he always looked at it and wondered what the meaning was.

The word fits the vibe of a team that has thrived thanks in large part to performances from players who weren't top-shelf prospects. In fact, numerous players on the team, particularly in the bullpen, were released by other squads.

Brewers fans took a bit of delight in Craig Counsell using the word "daunting" to describe the challenge his Chicago Cubs face in closing the gap with the Brewers after Milwaukee ran away with the National League Central.

Counsell, of course, could easily be the manager in charge of this year's team, but he left in the offseason to pursue the Chicago job, and his bench coach was promoted as his replacement.

All Murphy has done is lead the 2024 team to more wins (93) than the 2023 team that also won the division (92).

Now we find out just how undaunted the 2024 Brewers can be.
