'Frankly, that makes it daunting': Craig Counsell addresses gap between Brewers and Cubs

Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy likes to call his team "undaunted."

"I just think it’s a great word to describe how to react to things when you’re disappointed or don’t get what you want," he said after providing shirts to his players in July with that same word. "Remain undaunted."

However, it appears Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell is a little more than slightly concerned about how good his former team is after the Brewers clinched the National League Central division Wednesday night.

In a pregame news conference at Wrigley Field Thursday, Counsell admitted his Cubbies have a long way to go to reach where the Brewers currently stand. The second-place Cubs were 11 games behind entering play on Thursday.

In Counsell's words, the Cubs catching up soon to the Brewers is a "daunting" task.

"Look, I think the message sent is there is a big gap, they're ahead of us by a lot," Counsell said. "It's a talented team on and off the field, but there's a big gap and we've got room to make up, there's no question about it. Frankly, that makes it daunting ... they've been good."

So Counsell, who managed the Brewers for the team's previous nine seasons, is now daunted by their success? It's possible that Cubs fans won't be too thrilled with that.

Maybe Murphy should send him a shirt.
